COACHING AT HOBSONVILLE BOWLING CLUB

HBC is fortunate to have an accredited Bowls NZ coach.

  • Warren Harding ph. (09) 4126129 or 027 448 8508 or email coaching@hobsonvillebowls.co.nz

The coach works to Bowls NZ training criteria and methods in training new juniors through to experienced bowlers who wish to improve their game.

All new bowlers must have some positive knowledge of the game, and below is an abbreviated version of the fundamental laws every player should know and observe.

New bowlers need to know the fundamentals of delivering a bowl before entering the game, and the coach is there to assist beginners to properly deliver a bowl and give an overview of the game. It is better to have your first instructions from a proper coach than picking them up from other bowlers whilst attempting to learn and play the game.

The coach will, in the first instance, demonstrate and go over a set of fundamentals and movements that are required to deliver a bowl to send it on its way hopefully to the jack. The coach will train you in the variety of shots that can be taken and used by the experienced bowler in the various team positions they play during the game. That may become necessary to move a jack or a bowl to advantage the team they play in.

But in the first instance, the initial training will always be the ability to draw to the jack. As the new bowler becomes more experienced, the coach will explain tactics and requirements of the position they play in within the team. Different exercises and challenges can be set for bowlers to practice and develop their game and performance.

The club also has demonstration bowls that new bowlers can borrow until they are at the stage of purchasing their own set. The coach can give guidance to the selection of the right bowl since there are so many different types and different lines that have evolved over the years.

The club will endeavour to set up regular coaching days for groups and the coach is also available for individual one on one if required. Should you wish to take advantage of these opportunities speak with officers of the club or the listed coach to arrange times and dates.

CD’s can be played at the club with the Bowls NZ approved disc to show the actions of the various shots demonstrated by our national representatives. Another aid is an app called Coaches Eye, which allows the bowler to see their progress and where they can improve their actions.

There is a lot to becoming a proficient bowler, and the coach is only too happy to assist. The game of bowls is addictive, and the junior years are some of the best in enjoyment in the developing bowler.

At club days, new bowlers will be drawn to play with other bowlers and further their experience and develop their abilities before being selected in club teams for championships and the like. Juniors (up to 5 years ) have their championships to play in and set themselves against their contemporaries.
