Howick College has announced that they will be offering a Netball AcademyProgramme to Year 9 students enrolling in 2024 and onwards.The announcement comes on the heels of their premier netball team’s impressiveseason that includes their undefeated winning streak at the 2023 Upper NorthIsland Secondary Schools tournament. The team has subsequently qualified as oneof the top 16 teams to compete at the NZSS National Netball Championships in October.Director of Sport, Adelita Sotutu, says she is excited about what the newprogramme has to offer students passionate about netball.“Our premier team made Howick College history when they won at UNISS and theNetball Academy will ensure that our next generation of talented young playershave the skills they need to become the best athletes they can be both on and offthe court.”
The half-year, subject-focussed programme will develop fundamental netball skillsand abilities for those students identified as having talent in the sport.The course will build on existing skills and knowledge and provide an opportunityfor students to engage in practical and theory sessions that cover rules, nutrition,fitness, skill acquisition and development, and game analysis.Selection for the academy, which is by application and trial, will take place later interm 4, 2023 with dates still to be confirmed.Sotutu is incredibly proud of the calibre of netball players the school has produced.“We were absolutely thrilled when Amelia Walmsley was named in the SilverFerns squad and Lili Tokaduadua was offered a full contract with the ANZNorthern Stars for next year. I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”
