Kia ora koutou whanau

We are only one week away from travelling to the Aotearoa Māori National Netball tournament in Rotorua, and no better Māori netball event captures the talent of our young kohine as whanau gather at the venue to enjoy a weekend of whakawhanaungatanga and netball!

Travel
The rental vans will depart from Wellington railway station (opposite McDonald's) at 5 am, Hutt Valley netball courts (outside Walter Nash stadium on Taine Street) at 5 am and the east side carpark at Porirua railway station at 5.30 am on Friday morning, 29 March 2024. The Paraparaumu pickup will be at the BP Service Station on Kapiti Rd at 6 am. The last pickup point is outside New World in Levin on SH1 at approximately 6.45 am.
The space in the vans is tight, so everyone is allocated one sports bag to include your sleeping bag, linen and clothing. If your whanau are travelling on the same day, it would be helpful if they could help to transport luggage; this will provide more leg room for you.
We are returning on Monday morning, 1st April, departing at 9.00 am. The vans will follow the same route as we did when leaving Wellington.
Our travelling uniform is the Ikaroa Ki Te Tonga tracksuit (t-shirts, track shoes) and backpack. No other garments are permitted.

Powhiri
Whakaeke – tomo mai ngā rohe katoa i roto i te whare. Waiariki waka enter first to accompany Makau Ariki into the whare. The powhiri will begin at 1pm with a karakia, the kawa is Ngāti Whakaue, mihi mai te motu (speeches) waiata kinaki a rohe. This is followed by the blessing and dedication of taonga returned.
The dress code for Ikaroa Ki Te Tonga is a black skirt (modest length) and black sports tops. We have been advised that we will have to take our shoes off when entering the building. The managers will have a bag to carry your shoes in so they don’t get mixed up with other waka.We have some trophies to return. The captain of the U15 and U19 teams will stand behind ngā mate whanau, and the photos and trophies will be placed on the mahau. The trophies are to be left at the event.
Whanau are welcome to join us and must wear appropriate clothing of similar attire.

Accommodation
We are staying at the Keswick Christ Camp, Cooper Avenue, Rotorua, on the Lake shoreline in Rotorua.
PJs and bare feet are NOT to be worn in the dining room or around the facility; please ensure you are dressed appropriately at all times. Note: we treat our accommodation like a marae therefore, marae protocol must be observed and respected. This includes respect for others and their belongings.
Clothing
Players must pack a sheet, pillow, sleeping bag, and towels for showers and swimming.
There is no need to bring excess clothing as you wear your playing strip, T-shirt, and tracksuit most days. We expect these to be worn while away from your accommodation. They must be worn properly; no slippers, scarves, hats/beanies, or coloured clothing should be worn underneath any of the uniforms. All teams are to decide if the entire team will wear black or white socks, not a mixture of both.

Meals
Our morning and evening meals are provided at the accommodation, lunches and recovery food will be provided daily. Players must provide and pack their own lunches on Good Friday for the road trip to Rotorua. Players will also require money (approx. $20) for something to eat on their way back to Wellington i.e., McDonalds etc.

Games
Saturday 30 March 2024
All teams will assemble at 7.45 am at the Rotorua Netball Centre, Malroy Rd, Pomare, Rotorua, for the March Pass at 8 am. The dress code is tracksuits and sports shoes. As we are the hosts for 2025, we will be the first team performing our March Pass. The games start at 9.15 am and are expected to finish around 4 pm.
Sunday 31 March 2024
The first round starts at 8.45 am, and the Prize giving will be held at the netball courts straight after the last game at approximately 4 p.m.

Whanau Time

The weekend's objective is to play in a netball tournament; therefore, the focus for coaches and their players is netball. No whanau are permitted to visit their kotiro before, during the game, or at the accommodation unless necessary. Whanau are asked to keep their distance during the tournament and leave the coaching and player welfare to the team officials. Coaches will make time for players to spend with whanau, usually after the last game (approx. 30 minutes). For the younger players, mobile phone usage will be kept to a minimum, and there will be no communication after 9 pm.
Pō whakangahau
The Pō whakangahau involves the teams and their whanau and starts after dinner on Sunday evening at 7 pm. It’s a chance to celebrate our achievements, share humorous stories, enjoy each other’s company and an opportunity to windup our Māori netball campaign. If you would like to take your kohine home after the event, that is fine; please let your manager know.
Discipline
Inappropriate and/or disrespectful behaviour will not be tolerated – disciplinary action could include being sent home. As a member of our rōpū exemplary behaviour is expected for the entire weekend.
