vs Burnside

Winners
Lyttelton maintained their unbeaten run in the second division with a 28-12 win over Burnside in the curtain-raiser. The port team admitted the game was much tougher than the score-line suggests.

Burnside put up a spirited showing despite having to make four backline changes and making do with just two substitutes over all.

Two of Lyttelton’s substitutes, fleet-footed wing Bruce Buakula and hooker Brendan Hughes, were vital to the team as Burnside mounted a comeback in the second half. Lock Anthony Goomes was another to help keep Lyttelton on track.

For Burnside, first-five Roscoe Jacobs produced a fine display in his first outing in the position. Prop-cum-hooker Eddie Elia was outstanding in the pack, gaining solid support from Toby Kenneally, Josh Gibbons, and Sam Campbell.

Shirley v. Lyttelton 1.00pm Burwood 1

WIN......53 - 17

Undefeated so far!!!!

The unbeaten Lyttelton division two side carried on their winning way in the curtain-raiser, beating Shirley, 53-17, after leading 29-3 at the break. With more structure to their game and playing some adventurous 15-man rugby with straight direct running, Lyttelton were always on track to record another win.
Shirley, after a shaky start, did have a good final quarter, although things did become testy in the second half with a penalty try to Shirley and Lyttelton reduced to 13 men for a period with red and yellow cards.
For Lyttleton, flanker Chris Till was a tireless worker, first-five Brendon Nolan directed play well and Chris Barry was a strong running centre who proved a constant threat. Shirley loose forwards Judd Robbins and Chris McGrath battled hard in trying to get the ball over the advantage line and halfback Jake Vernall was tidy in clearing the ball.

Lyttelton vs University
36-14

In the second division curtain-raiser, Lyttelton used its more structured play to triumph, 36-14, over a University side who, despite many dashes of brilliance, could not string together enough good plays to really capitalise.
The second half started with Lyttelton leading, 15-7, and they racked the points up.  A try from Chris Poff was converted by fullback Johnny Fisher to put the score at 22-7.
Thena tries from Josh Moulson, and James McBride (both converted by Fisher) really knocked University down. But University had the final say, with a runaway from left wing Kazu Saruwatari, which he converted himself

The division two curtain-raiser saw Lyttelton carry on their merry winning way in disposing of Belfast, 35-0, after leading 20-0 at the break. Playing a well-constructed game in the conditions they dominated, using ball in hand with skill as an effective means to prove that passing and running still had a place even on such a inclement day.

Captain and prop Stefan Viola led by example and received able support in the front row from hooker Joe Forster. First-five Brendon Nolan was the pivot and playmaker who called the shots in a fine structured team effort from the portsiders.
