Upper Hutt Maidstone United Netball Club

It all began in 1979, the Upper Hutt Rugby Football Cub decided that the opportunity should be available for wives and girlfriends of players to play a sport associated with the club to promote the image of a "Family Club".  It was agreed that two netball teams would be the perfect option and that a Committee be formed.

The Original Committee

The first official meeting was held on March 5th 1980 with Jim Archibald, of the Rugby Club's Management Committee, and Harry Kerr as the Rugby Club's Publicity Officer in attendance.

The first committee of the new netball club were appointed as follows:

  • Rowena McLennan (Chairperson)
  • Christina Kora (Secretary)
  • Sue Archibald (Treasurer)
  • Alma Andrews (Coach)

The netball committee was positive in their approach and as a result the Rugby Club advanced them finance for uniforms, balls, fees as well as advertising in the Upper Hutt Leader.  The interest in the newly formed Netball Club was such that the number of teams was increased from two to three.

On the 14th of July 1980, the following people were appointed honorary club members for their role in getting the Maidstone United Netball Club off the ground:

  • Bob Vine (President)
  • Harry Kerr
  • Pam Harrison
  • Brian Young
  • Jim Archibald

While the club currently has many trophies that are presented at the end of year dinner, in the first playing year the following trophies were donated:

  • The Harry Kerr Trophy for the Most Improved Trophy
  • The UHRFC Trophy for the Best Club Member
  • The Heather Hill Trophy for Uniform and Attendance
