HOCKEY REGISTRATIONS 2024

Please read all the information below then: Click here to register

Welcome to the 2024 hockey season at Marian College, whether you are new or returning, we hope this season will be a rewarding one, building on the success of last year. This letter outlines some key information for parents and players.

Competition:

  •  1st XI team: CHA secondary schools SSP competition played on Fridays 4pm – 9pm. All players will be registered with CHA and will have dual affiliation with their club of choice (if they choose to play for both club) and school. We encourage this to help build the hockey skills and reaction times in preparation for the Marie Fry / Federation Cuptournament in Hamilton.
  • 2nd XI team: This team will play in the CHA organised competition SSL played mostly on Wednesdays between 3pm and 7.30pm.

Trainings:

Trainings for both the 1st XI and 2nd XI team will be Mondays at Marist Park. The time of these trainings is to be confirmed but likely to be between 5.30pm and 8.30pm. All players are expected to attend all trainings. The 1 st XI will also have Thursday (TBC) morning fitness sessions at school starting at 7.00am

Cost:

Hockey is user-pay, and we need to pay for equipment, trainings, CHA fees etc. You are welcome to arrange with Mrs Moody to pay these costs off in instalments. An indication of the expected fees is outlined as follows:

  • Trial and Registration fee $70 (non-refundable) – pay when you register.
  • 1st XI: $400 (less the registration fee) and Tournament costs (estimated $1200 each)
  • 2nd XI: $300 (less registration fee)

Transport:

Players are expected to make their own way to trainings. Due to no taxi-vans being available for school sport, transport will need to be provided by parents/caregivers. The 2nd XI games can be at Marist Park (walk), Nga Puna Wai, or Nunweek Park, with the possibility of Rolleston or Rangiora depending on the teams in the grade. There might be some days we can use the school van, but this is unlikely to  be regular. The 1st XI games are usually at Nga Puna Wai. As it is a Friday, we are likely to have access to the school van some weeks, but we will need parent transport to assist also. Please indicate on your registration if you can assist with transporting students on a Wednesday or Friday. Students are to make their own way home from games.

Trials:

Trials are held for all students wishing to play hockey for Marian this year. Teams are selected on attitude, effort, and performance. It is not guaranteed a player from previous years will be selected in the team the following year. It is expected that anyone who misses out on the 1st XI team will continue to play for Marian College hockey by playing in the 2nd XI. We always need fill-ins at times and injuries happen, requiring players to be called up to play for the 1st XI. A player named in the 1st XI who is not performing or meeting the team and school expectations could also be asked to play for the 2nd XI.

Trial Dates:

Please be at Marist Park at least 15 minutes before to get organised and warm-up.

● Thursday 7th March 4:00pm-5.40pm

● Monday 18th March 4:30pm-5:40pm (excluding those involved at Maadi Cup)

● Wednesday 3rd April 4:00pm-5:40pm

If you have an issue attending any of these dates, please see Miss Dick asap. You may need to swap a shift or take leave from paid work if required to attend the trials please.

Uniform & Gear:

Players must have their own hockey stick, shin pads and mouth guard. It is compulsory to wear a mouthguard and shin pads during all training and games. Both teams will be issued hockey tops and skirts. All players need to purchase one pair of plain red socks and one pair of plain white socks (preferably from Sporting Edge Unit 9, 501 WairakeiRd, or Just Hockey, 37 Mandeville St – as they have no logos). Players should wear navy spandex shorts or other appropriate clothing under their skirts, but not below the length of the skirts.

Playing for School and/or Club:

Playing in a school team is a great opportunity to get to know other students, and if selected in the 1st XI team, the honour of representing Marian College at Mercy Cup and Secondary Sports Week tournament. We encourage and hope that you will play for Marian College to help us continue our proud hockey history.

Registration:

You must complete the Hockey Registration Form on the Marian College Sports Website by Wednesday 6th March and pay the non-refundable registration fee of $70 when you register.
