THE MARIST FAMILY

Marist Rugby Club is known as the family club.  Several families have had a huge influence in the club over the years. Families such as the Gleesons, the Kennys, the Hargoods and the Hourigans.

Gleesons
The Gleeson family were founding members of Marist when the late Martin Gleeson and his son Terry joined the club in 1945.  Martin put alot of time into the development of the club in its founding years.  Terry was a foundation player, playing for the junior team and after his days of playing Terry managed both junior and senior sides in the club.  In 1958 Terry became the club captain which he did for four years. In 1968 he became treasurer which he remained in office until 1992.  In 1984 Terry was awarded a club life membership. Terry is the current Sports Association treasurer.  Terry's son Barry played right through the grades at Marist and played for the club's Senior side in the years between 1976-1983. In 1983 Barry joined the club's committee and is current the Chairman of the Marist Sports Association.  Barry's sons have played either Senior A or Senior Reserves Rugby for Marist with Keiran still part of the current Premier team.

The Kennys have been an intergral part of the Marist Club when Eric joined in 1963.  Eric managed the senior team for a number of years before becoming Club Captain in 1976 before in 1977 taking on a long reign as club President.  Eric's wife, the late Kath, took over the catering operations for the club and both were awarded life membership in 1984.  The children in the Kenny family have all played a big part in the club with Peter, Paul and Shaun all having played, coached and managed various teams, daughter Michelle (Beaver) who has been a rock in managing the Premiers on a number of occasions and also continuing on where her mother left off by running the kitchen as well as running the Junior Rugby Club for a number of years.  Michelle is now the Chairperson of the Marist Rugby committee.  All of the Kenny children have followed in their father's footsteps in having roles on the committee with another Patricia being secretary of the club from 1980-1984.
