Point of Interest

In it’s 21st year the Club discussed Life Membership for those members who have served the club sufficiently to deserve being made a Life Member.  As founder of the club Mr John Parker was made the club’s second life member on 28 June 1998 at the club’s 20th AGM.

Melville entered a team in a National Cricket Max Tournament and despite losing every single game were winners of the Plate Division due to points collected during the round Robin games.  Probably the only time a Melville team has ever lost every game in a competition but still won a trophy for winning their Division.

Melville won the Hec Holland Plate for the Seniors 1-Day competition.

Point of Interest

Robin Oxenham died on 11 October 1999.  Robin was a past Vice President, Honorary Vice President, Club Coach and Club Captain of the Club.

Melville entered the National Cricket Max Tournament again this year and this tournament saw the club field a team in it’s first game under lights and it’s first win under lights.  In this game Melville won the toss and the Captain Trevarr McCarthy decided to bat first.  Shane Young and brother Craig Young put on an opening partnership of 53 off just 2.3 overs before Craig Young was out for 53 off just 9 balls.

Andrew Tod then came to the wicket with 3 balls left in the 3rd over and together with Shane Young put on a partnership of 121 off the remaining 7.3 overs to give the team a total of 174 for 1 off just 10 overs (just under 3 runs a ball).  Shane finished on 57 not out and Andrew 62 not out.  At the time this was the second highest score in a Cricket Max game at any level, only 8 runs behind the record.

Imagine being Trevarr McCarthy seeing all those runs being scored and being padded up as the next batsman in and not getting to bat, especially after being not out in 6 consecutive innings in Cricket Max before this game.

Melville won the game by 73 runs restricting the opposition to just 65 runs off the bat but let themselves down in the match by giving away 32 wides and 4 leg byes to help the opposition get to 101 all out.  Warren Neeley took 2 wickets for 12 off 2 overs and John Dickenson took 2 for 18 off 2 overs, missing out on a hattrick for the second Cricket Max game in a row when he missed taking the 3rd wicket.

Unfortunately, Melville lost their 2nd place semi final and came away with no trophies.  The official scorer for this game was Dave Crowe father of Martin and Jeff Crowe who played cricket for New Zealand.  Martin Crowe was the inventor of Cricket Max.

Melville Senior B Team won the GF Hampton Cup this season.  The team won both the final and topped the points table for the season.  Trevor Collins needed 1 more wicket from the last 3 wickets in the final to have taken 50 wickets for the season but was denied when Paul Marsh took the last 3 wickets with a hat trick bowling from the opposite end to Trevor.  The last wicket to be taken in the hat trick was a catch taken in the field by none other than Trevor Collins.
