Introducing Adrian Street –Forwards Rugby Coach
It gives us great pleasure to introduce Adrian Street, who joins us in the wider Mark McAlly coaching team with our Senior Men's side.
Adrian’s rugby journey started as a young teenager at boarding school. Interestingly, rugby wasn’t actually his first sporting love — basketball was. It was during his later years at school and then his three years at agricultural university that he made the transition into rugby as his number one sport.
And back in those days, there was no lifting in rugby. So Adrian brought one particular advantage from his basketball background — he was a white man who could jump!
From university, he played for the university’s 1st XV and 7s team Adrian then joined Southwell Rugby Union Football Club, just a mile down the road, and went on to spend an impressive 11 years with the club, making more than 300 Premiership appearances.
His playing career has taken him to clubs in different parts of the world, before eventually bringing him to New Zealand, where he played Premiership rugby for Takapuna Rugby Club and also had a short stint with Onewhero Rugby club in the seniors.
But Adrian’s rugby story doesn’t stop with playing.
While still playing, he began coaching youth rugby at Southwell, developing a passion for helping younger players understand and enjoy the game. After retiring from playing in New Zealand, he continued that coaching journey, working with age-group teams right through to First XV level at local schools, and U21s
Last season, Adrian brought that experience to Waihi Athletics Rugby Club, working with Mark and Baz plus the forwards and helping the team secure their third Thames Valley title.
What Adrian brings is more than just playing experience. He brings years of Premiership rugby, international experience, coaching across multiple levels, and, importantly, a genuine understanding of what it takes to build a successful forward pack and a successful team.
We’re delighted to have him on board and look forward to seeing what he can bring to the club.
