Waikato Rugby welcomes Japanese international Daiki Nakajima

Waikato Rugby is excited to announce the signing of Japanese international scrum-half Daiki Nakajima, who will join the province for the 2026 Hilux NPC season.

Nakajima joins Waikato from Kobelco Kobe Steelers, one of Japan Rugby League One's leading clubs, and the current League Champions. The 30-year-old brings a wealth of professional experience, having represented both Kobelco Kobe Steelers and Japan at the highest level, adding experience, skill and leadership to the Waikato squad.

Waikato Rugby Chief Executive Dr. Amy Marfell said Nakajima will be a fantastic addition to the playing group and the wider Waikato Rugby whānau this season.

"We're pleased to welcome Daiki to the Waikato Rugby family. He's a quality person and an experienced professional who will bring real value to our playing group in 2026, both on and off the field. Daiki not only brings a high level of skill to the squad, but his experience and leadership will provide important learning and development opportunities for our younger and emerging athletes.

"We know our Waikato community will make Daiki feel right at home, and we're excited to see him in red, yellow and black this season."

Nakajima said he is looking forward to embracing the challenge of playing in New Zealand and is looking forward to becoming part of the Waikato community.

"I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to join Waikato Rugby. Playing in New Zealand has always been something I've wanted to experience, and I'm excited to challenge myself in such a proud rugby province.

"I've already felt so welcome, and I can't wait to meet our supporters, become part of the Waikato community and pull on the Waikato Rugby colours."

Everyone at Waikato Rugby extends a warm welcome to Daiki and we look forward to seeing them become part of the Waikato Rugby whānau throughout the 2026 Hilux NPC season.
