New Brighton Netball Club was formed in 1946 by Mildred Marks(Tregurtha) and was orginally the Kakatai Basketball Club,  this later became New Brighton Basketball in the 1960's and then was renamed to New Brighton Netball Club we beleive this transistion hapened in the 1970's but the exact date is unknown. 

Kakatai  name was  given by Tommy Kahi, the musician, and means "song of the sea birds". 

In 2008 the club joined with Eastern Community Sport and Recreation and has strengthening our community base on the east of Christchurch.
