WAITAKI SPORTS HALL OF FAME – GUIDELINES – Version 2, Feb 2024

1. ELIGIBILITY:

Membership of the Waitaki Sports Hall of Fame is considered special and exclusive and as such a robust process must be undertaken when considering the criteria against the nominee’s history and achievements. It would be expected under normal circumstances that a maximum of one person per year is inducted into the Waitaki Sports Hall of Fame. The geographical boundaries are those of the Waitaki District.

1.1 The selection panel must be satisfied that the nominee meets a significant number of the multiple criteria listed below:

- have lived and / or been schooled in the area for at least 5 years

- living in the area at the time of their major sporting achievement/s

- have represented a local team or club at the time of their major achievement/s

- have represented NZ or suitable equivalent, or coached NZ or suitable equivalent

- won multiple NZ titles, or coached individual/s or team/s to similar

- longevity, consistency etc taken into account

- significant impact on the sport in the Waitaki area

1.2 Ideally the nominee has been retired from their chosen sport for 5 years or more (has their achievement lasted the test of time).

1.3 The selection panel has the discretion to consider people from all aspects of the sporting world i.e. in very special circumstances an administrator may be considered.


2. SELECTION PANEL

2.1 Selection panel is to have a minimum of 6 members

2.2 Selection panel is to comprise:

- a mix of ages, gender and cultural backgrounds

- a mix of sports, including mainstream and minority sports

- a mix of sporting roles (athletes, coaches, administrators)

- member/s of the media

- at least one inductee

- Sport Waitaki coordinator

2.3 Term of appointment – selection panel members are to serve a maximum of two 2-year terms, with the option of further reappointment possible where appropriate, with the exclusion of the Sport Waitaki Coordinator, whose position is permanent. The policy is to stagger appointments so that approximately one-fifth of the panel is rotated each year.

2.4 Commitment - the process will entail consideration of nominations, possible shortlisting and then selection of the successful nominee. It will be carried out by email initially, followed by a minimum of one face-to-face meeting.


3. NOMINATIONS

3.1 Nominees and potential nominees are added to a “long list” which is considered annually. Nominees can be added to the list at any time and can be made by any member of the public including selection panel members. Unsuccessful nominees can be reconsidered in the future.  

3.2 A media announcement will be made each year to raise awareness and invite nominations.

3.3 Each nomination will be researched by the delegated researcher. The nomination and accompanying biography will be provided in confidence to each panel member for consideration.

3.4 The selection panel will meet to consider the nominees on the longlist and agree on the one successful nominee. The successful nominee must have a seventy percent (70%) majority to be accepted as an inductee.

3.5 Panel members must declare any relevant interests in regard to any nominations, so that the potential for any conflict of interest can be assessed.

3.6 A database will be compiled of all Waitaki sports people who have played internationally.

4. ADMINISTRATION

4.1 The North Otago Sports Bodies Assn is the overseeing body for the Waitaki Sports Hall of Fame.

4.2 The Waitaki Community Recreation Centre is responsible for administration of the Waitaki Sports Hall of Fame.

4.3 The annual Hall of Fame induction takes place at the annual Sports Awards.

4.4 NOSB will try to secure a sponsor each year for the WSHOF induction.
