Outline of the Intermediate and Adult coaching programme - Coaches Mike Bain and Mike Ryan
Purpose:
To have fun, meet new people, learn basic tennis strokes (technical) and how to play the game (tactical).

Coaching Approach:
There will be a real focus on allowing attendees to hit as many tennis balls as possible during the session with both external and internal (self) coaching for specific strokes.

Each session will focus primarily on the stroke outlined below, but there may be other strokes and activities included in the session.

Key coaching messages that will be covered with various strokes will be:

  • Grip options
  • Biomechanics of various strokes – body and stroke biomechanics
  • Feet – toes/heels as brakes
  • Positioning on court for strokes
  • Ball placement with strokes
  • Tactical – working out opposition weaknesses/positioning.

The following will be covered in each lesson and on the dates outlined. If a session is cancelled due to weather the stroke outlined for the next session WILL be covered on this date. This allows those that might like to just attend for practice/coaching on one or two strokes to be sure that that is the stroke that will be covered on that date.

Lesson One:  Forehand -Topspin and Backspin
Lesson Two: Backhand - Topspin and Backspin
Lesson Three: Serve – First and Second Serve/Overhead Smash
Lesson Four: Forehand Volley
Lesson Five:  Backhand volley
Lesson Six: Lob/Drop shot -Topspin/Backspin
Lession Seven:  Game Management/Tactics Doubles and Singles
Lession Eight: Recap; games; attendee driven stroke/coaching recaps

General Coaching Philosophy

  • Use query theory – ask questions.
  • Practice, practice, practice 10,000 hours to fully master one specific skill
  • Understanding of basic biomechanics (body positioning, foot positioning, grip, racket swing along with tactical awareness) allows self coaching.
