Metal Detector

Our metal detector has been configured to detect arrow points and shafts and to ignore [most] other items.

Other than powering it on or off you do not need to press any buttons and you should not do so as that will alter the detection settings.

Although designed for outdoor use it is not an industrial model. Please treat it as if you had spent several hundred dollars purchasing it for yourself.

Press the red button on the right to power on.

Target categories Fe and 4 should be indicated, the battery level should show at least one black segment, and CUSTOM mode should be indicated. If not, please inform the webmaster.

Using the Detector

eHold the search coil just far enough off the ground to allow it to move freely, and sweep the detector from side-to-side.

Keep the search coil parallel to the ground as you sweep; do not lift it at the ends of your sweeps.

You can sweep quite quickly but take small steps between sweeps so that you don't miss more than an arrows worth of ground in between sweeps.

The detector generates an electrical field and detects fluctuations in the field caused by the passage of a conductive object through the field. i.e. keep the search coil moving.

Identifying Objects

Although the detector has been tuned to ignore most non-arrows, not everything you detect will be an arrow.

When the search coil passes over an object a tone will sound and the screen will display both a depth indication and a target identification number.

The tone, depth indication and identification number will vary depending on the conductivity of the object detected, it's size and it's depth.

You can learn the unique signals of a particular arrow by placing an arrow of the same type on the ground and moving the detector backwards and forwards an inch or so above it.

Remember that arrows are generally 20-30 inches long, lie in line with the line of flight, and are not buried very deeply. If you detect something short, lying cross-range. or buried 2-3 segments deep then it is probably not an arrow.

If you find something other than an arrow please remove it from the range so that it won't cause false positive signals again next time you or others are searching.

Carbon Arrows

The detector is able to detect carbon arrows but the signals produced resemble those of the background impurities in the field, so discrimination is difficult.

More work is required on clearing the field, and on determining how to properly interpret the detector's signals.

Manual

If you wish to know more about the detector, the owner's manual is available here.
