The Red Beach Squash Club was formed in 1982, just prior to the official opening in 1983 of the new surf lifesaving clubrooms with its two squash courts. The club proved a hit with locals and for a period in the 1980's squash membership was closed at the maximum 250 playing members.

The Squash Club now has about 100 members, including competitive seniors and intermediates, juniors, off-peak members and associates.

Interclub:

Red Beach teams compete in regular interclub competitions run by Squash Auckland against teams throughout the region. Interclub competitions are held in autumn (single round), winter (double round) and spring (single round).

Squash players are graded according to a computerised grading system, enabling interclub teams to be reasonably evenly matched.

Senior interclub is held on Monday and Tuesday nights. Teams from Silverdale and Red Beach Squash are often combined.

Masters squash (over 40) is strong in Auckland and Red Beach teams have competed well in it. Unlike the format for senior squash, each masters division is like a travelling circus, with clubs taking turns to host the whole division each week.

Masters interclub is held on Wednesday nights.

Senior Club Night:

Senior club night is on Thursday 6.00pm - 8.00pm.  This is a very informal evening with players typically getting in a couple of games with each opponent, between beers.

Junior Squash:

  • Junior club night is Friday from 4.30pm - 6.45pm.  Very relaxed, social squash for all levels of ability.  The bar is open for parents while the juniors are on court.
  • Auckland Squash Junior Interclub.  Juniors are encouraged to compete in this very sucessful competition.   Takes place on Sunday mornings during term time.   For full details Click here
  • Tournaments - All juniors are registered with Squash New Zealand and can choose which club tournaments they would like to play in at clubs round Auckland.

Tournaments:

Squash clubs around the country hold tournaments every week of the year and registered players can enter any of them, provided they meet the grading requirements of the particular tournament.

The Red Beach club holds two tournaments; a summer tournament is held in February. A masters tournament is also held in the in the October/November time frame. Further, the club holds its annual club championships each year in September  A number of Red Beach players also do away-trips as a group to tournaments in the Bay of Plenty, Waikato and Northland, mixing the social and competitive aspects of the sport. For the more serious players, there are the Auckland Championships and the Interdistrict teams event (now called the National SuperChamps). The Auckland Champs are for individuals, while the SuperChamps are the toughest competition on the squash calendar.

The SuperChamps are a graded competition for club teams of 7 (5 playing in each round), playing first for the provincial title and the winner going on to the national competition. It’s an event that suits big clubs because of the large number of players of the same standard required to make up a team, but Red Beach has been one of the strongest small clubs in the country performing in this competition in recent years.

Social Club:

Squash is a very social part of the Red Beach club. You can find a fair few members in the lounge on a Friday evening, when both the bar and kitchen are open, and if there’s a big match on it’ll be televised on the big screen.
