Membership News

Dear Members

I trust that you are all keeping safe and using this opportunity to improve your fitness via zoom or out on the road. I'm not but I am eating a lot of home-baked food.

The committee has met and set the subscriptions for 2020/21 and we have requested feedback from every member regarding their intentions. We have had some replies but there are a lot of members for whom we do not have any information about their intentions and we need this information to plan for 2020

The lockdown has impacted on our access to the courts and will continue to do so at level 3. We are hopeful that we will be at level 2 in May at which time we envisage that social access to the courts will be allowed with some criteria for social distancing, basic hygiene, and recording of people who visit. The situation is fluid and we can't make any promises with our crystal ball, unfortunately, being in for repairs. As a combined club we will need to ensure compliance to government, surf-lifesaving, and squash organisation criteria and the management committee will be compiling the conditions under which we will operate during level 2 prior to the level change.

We are a club and as such our subscriptions need to cover our expenses. We are hopeful that we can get some relief from our creditors this year to compensate for the lack of access but they too have costs to cover so we can't guarantee this nor the extent of the relief if any. What we can say is that the remainder of the year will be jam-packed with social events and squash club activities so prepare yourselves!

We are trying to make membership as affordable as possible and would like to keep as many members on as we can; so please approach a committee member if you would like to remain as a member, but you are genuinely concerned about the affordability of the fees, and we will do what we can to assist.

We are using Facebook as our primary means of communication so please get all members to join the Facebook group.

Interclub – unlikely to resume until we reach Level 1.  At this current time, we are hoping to be able to start Masters Winter on the currently scheduled date of 10th June, as well as starting a shortened Senior Winter R1 the same week (8th/9th June) which would lead to a full round 2 from the end of July.  Should these start dates need to be delayed we will look at other options.  As soon as we can confirm start dates we will advise everyone of the formats and entry information.

Open Club Tournaments – also unlikely to resume until we reach Level 1.  All tournaments scheduled to be held before the end of May should be postponed, and once we have a clearer idea of when we may be able to resume we will contact clubs who have had tournaments affected to try and reschedule where possible for later in the year.

In-house Club Events – we expect these will be able to be held under Level 2 on a small scale under the conditions specified by the government which is not yet clarified.  Clubs should be focusing on these in the short term to re-engage and reconnect with members as much as possible to assist with retention which is going to be all-important for clubs coming out of Levels 4 & 3.  Think about how you can run events like club nights, in-house leagues, coaching, drills, while still incorporating elements of physical distancing and playing within a particular bubble

Junior Update - TBA

Previous updates below

Junior Update

Junior Club nights are back in full swing with increasing numbers turning up.   There is quite a bit of movement on the junior ladder which is keeping players very competitive!   Watch out at the top – there is some new blood coming through.

The Auckland Squash Junior Interclub ( for term 2 saw a number of entrants from Red Beach.   This is a brilliant competition and all juniors should give it a go when it resumes next term.

Congratulations to Anne Leakey and Ashlee Pepper who were both selected for squash New Zealand development squads. For a small club like ours having 2 juniors earning national selection is an amazing achievement.

Red Beach Squash Club had 5 juniors listed in the Auckland top 10 ranking:  Shevaun Green U17 ranked #8, Ashlee Pepper U15 ranked #4 and Anne Leakey U15 ranked #6.

Social Squash League

The club's social league remains to be very popular. The league provides a competitive side while remaining relaxed and social, flexible on times, and reduces the travel of interclub.

A new round of the handicap ladder challenge has started again. 16 members are playing. Should you be interested in participating in future ladder challenges, please email or send him a text on 021-848784.

Help Bring back the Social Vibe!

The committee would still love to hear your ideas on how we can get the social vibe back into the squash club.  We kicked off with a great open tournament in February and it was great that players, members, and their families supported the weekend and the BBQ on Saturday night. Again, we will be looking at hosting more social events alongside our tournaments this year. These events could go a long way to:   a) help fundraise for future improvement to the squash facilities and;  b) most importantly get the social vibe back into the squash club again! So, whilst the committee may have some ideas in mind, please feel free in contacting any of the committee members with any suggestions on potential events you would see yourself participating in.

Previous updates below

The Red Beach Squash Club Open Tournament on 8-11 February 2018 was the best in the history of the club.  We had 88 contestants including 8 A grade players.

The final of the Men’s Open Division was between two Belmont Squash Club members, Gabe Yam (A1) and Sam Sayes (A2).  Watched from a packed gallery these two young players provided a spectacular display of skill and tenacity with Gabe taking the honors in 3 games.

Saturday evening saw over 80 players and guests relaxing in the club’s lounge and enjoying a truly magnificent feast from the spit roast of master chefs Chris Hare, Mike Beacham and Zane MacBeth

So congratulations to Mat Pepper for organising the whole event and to Kevin Robinson for his big contribution to the planning.  Also a huge thanks to all the committee members who helped run the tournament and organised the Saturday feast.

Squash Auckland Prizegiving

This year we picked up 2 pennants for winning interclub. Congratulations to our Masters Division 4 and division 11 teams who both won the Autumn Round of interclub!!!

Congratulations to Ashlee Pepper who picked up the award for the most improved Junior Girl in Auckland for 2017!!!. Ashlee improved by 1100 points this season which was more than any other girl in New Zealand. This is the first time for many years that a Red Beach club member has picked up an individual award at the prizegiving.

Aaron Webb was also nominated for the administrator of the year. Unfortunately Aaron had some stiff competition with Sharon from Browns Bay who organised the World Masters games taking the award. Aaron has done a heap of work for our club over the last 10 or more years. He has also been heavily involved the organisation of college squash. A well-deserved nomination!!!
