Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sail?

Yes! We use special dinghies called Hansa 303's. Our Hansa 303 Boats are stable and easy to sail. They are designed to make sailing easy for people with a wide range of mobility, learning, visual and hearing needs. They carry two people one of which will be an experienced skipper.

Is it safe?

Yes! Sailing is considered a “safe sport”, and safety is our upmost concern. We run a safety boat which shadows the dinghies on the water at all times. We monitor conditions constantly, and have trained volunteers who operate according to our stringent safety policies and protocols. We supply certified buoyancy aids, and the golden rule for everyone is to wear them.

I cannot swim. Can I sail?

Yes! We insist on using buoyancy aids that support all sailors regardless of their swimming ability. The safety boat is manned with a skipper and crew to retrieve anyone from the water if necessary.

I am a parent/ caregiver /friend bringing a child. Can I come with my child/ward?

Yes! We actively encourage parents/ caregivers and friends to participate where possible. We are happy to discuss any questions you may have and welcome you to come and see how we operate before you go sailing if you wish. Sailing is a great family sport.

But sailing is an expensive sport isn’t it?

No. As a charity, we keep costs as low as possible for our participants. To help with running costs and equipment, we only charge $7.50 per session.

I have a wheel chair. Is this an activity I can do?

We have a safety certified Crane mounted on the jetty. Participants with mobility needs can be transferred from wheelchairs into boats using slings.
