At Selwyn College, we are immensely proud of our high participation numbers, which continue to grow every year. Currently we offer 35 sports throughout the year. We are placed among the top schools in Auckland for participation numbers as a percentage of the school roll. This would not be possible without the support of the Board of Trustees, staff, students, parents, and the wider Selwyn community.
Our goal is for each athlete to learn life skills that will help them, not only get the most out of our season but also enhance their educational experience at Selwyn, giving them more skills to find their own success in the future.
Sport is “co-curricular” and part of a complete education; participation is a privilege.
With this privilege comes the responsibility to honour: self, family, teammates, coaches, school, officials, and the entire Selwyn community.
We will act in its best interest both on and off the court/field, both inside and outside of our season.
This is an opportunity to push ourselves and others to levels that we may never be able to accomplish on our own.
We take guidance and direction from Sport NZ and the ‘Balance is Better’ philosophy. Our focus is on ensuring that our students have a positive and fun experience in whichever sport or activity they choose, and that we encourage students to play multiple sports should their time commitments allow them to do so.
We take pride in the number of teams that have been graded for Premier and Senior A1 competitions, a number that continues to grow every year. This includes our Football (boys and girls), Cricket (boys and girls), Basketball, Touch and Waterpolo teams. We firmly believe that we punch well above our weight, and can lay claim to being one of the best of the ‘little schools’ in Auckland.
Trials are held for all Premier teams and the top team(s) in each age category. Students who prefer a competitive pathway are encouraged to attend the relevant trials. We look to select multiple teams in each sport to ensure both sustainability and opportunity across all our codes, subject to numbers and availability of coaches and/or managers.
In addition, there are options for student-selected teams and social non-training teams, providing a socially competitive option for our students, which tends to be popular among our senior cohort in particular. In school, coaching and development programmes are also available in selected sports, as well as in-house social leagues.
We encourage any student who participates in individual sports to represent the school where possible, and we will facilitate entries into these competitions. Often, we do not know what individual sports our students may do outside of school, so please don’t be shy in coming forward to let us know of any opportunities that are available, as well as any achievements that we should celebrate.
No matter what level your child participates in, I would like to wish them success and enjoyment as they reap the benefits of involvement in a sporting activity.
Sincerely,
Zak Middleton – Director of Sport
