Our Local League Legend for May is Mel Piri from Otago!

Mel’s been involved with Otago Rugby League and Southern Zone for many years, holding many different positions. Mel is the current chairperson of Otago Rugby League and is instrumental in securing funding and resources for Otago teams. A lot of Mel’s work happens behind the scenes, doing much of the admin work that has allowed Otago Rugby League to be in the solid position they are in.

She was our Southern Zone Scorpions men’s manger last year and this year is the manager for the Otago Whalers and u18 boys’ team. Mel also helps to organise the Otago youth teams and supports other managers in their role. Mel managers to find time to do all these things to support rugby league in amongst her busy work and family life.

It was emphasised in Mel’s nominations that people are grateful for her tireless effort of getting rugby league of the ground running in Otago, providing opportunities for youth to get invovled. Mel’s dedication and contribution to rugby league is a massive asset to our South Island league community, which is why she is our May South Island Local League Legend!
