Southern Zone Rugby League welcomes the approval of the New Zealand Rugby League (NZRL) Connected Game Plan, marking a significant milestone in the future development of rugby league across Aotearoa.

Following a vote by NZRL members on Monday 15 June 2026, the Connected Game Plan was adopted, creating a new framework designed to strengthen how rugby league is governed, supported, resourced and delivered throughout New Zealand. The plan aims to better connect the game at all levels while ensuring communities continue to receive quality experiences and opportunities to participate in rugby league.

For our communities across Te Waipounamu, there are no immediate changes to competitions, programmes, pathways or participation opportunities. While the Connected Game Plan introduces changes to the national governance structure, rugby league delivery across our South Island communities will continue as normal as we work together through the transition.

As part of the new framework, Te Tauihu Rugby League, West Coast Rugby League, Aoraki Rugby League, Otago Rugby League and Southland District Rugby League will collectively form the Southern Rōpū, while Canterbury Rugby League will continue as an independent voting district member within the NZRL membership structure.

Importantly, Southern Zone Rugby League remains committed to working closely alongside Canterbury Rugby League and all South Island stakeholders to ensure rugby league across Te Waipounamu continues to grow, thrive and be strongly represented at a national level.

Southern Zone Rugby League General Manager Zara Fa'avae-Mika said the outcome reflects a shared commitment to strengthening the game for future generations.

While governance structures will evolve over time, our focus remains unchanged - supporting our districts, clubs, volunteers, coaches, referees, players and whānau, while creating positive experiences and meaningful pathways for everyone involved in our game."
