Southland Rally 2024 - 3 February
The weather was changable to say the least but it did not deter 40 intrepid vehicles, including 2 motorcycles from having a great day. The short route was 50 miles and the long route 80 miles, there were no casualities. The rally heaed through Invercargill and out to Rimu where there was 2 kms,of road reconstruction. Then to Woodlands and across to Browns for lunch at the Domain where the field tests were held. Bill Ainge (1955 Austin A30) was the Overall Winner and received the NZ AA Plate. Full results below:

Southland Rally 2023 - 4 February
This year’s Southland Rally was linked to the Na!onal Motorcycle Rally being held on the following Sunday and Monday (see the following report on the Na!onal Motorcycle Rally for details). The link up with the Na!onal Motorcycle Rally significantly increased the numbers of entrants over previous years and put significant pressure on the clubs volunteers and facili!es to accommodate them. The weather had been extremely warm on the run up to the rally and the forecast promised record temperatures. As the Southland Clubrooms carpark filled up with motorcycles, cars and entrants it was clear that it was going to be a very hot day, it was already in the mid 20s when the first compe!tors set off at 10:30. The clubrooms were very full as the 126 entrants (80 of whom were also on the NMR) plus navigator and passengers as they listened to the briefing. The split of entries was fairly predictable with: 4 Veterans, 17 Vintage, 14 Post Vintage, 41 Post War, 40 Post 60 and 10 Post 80. The oldest machines were Ashley Bell ‘s 1912 Renault and Frank Brookland’s 1912 DeDion and the youngest was Angus Petrie’s 1991 Rover Mini Cooper. Given the diversity of entries two routes were mapped out to the lunch !me stop at Wyndham Race Course; a short route for veteran, vintage and low powered vehicles and longer more tes!ng route for the rest. The first machines were away by 10:30, the short route went out through Kennington then Edendale to Wyndham. The long route took a right out of Clubrooms before taking a devious route to Wallacetown, then out to Hedgehope, Glencoe and Matarua before going over the bridge and turning off to Wyndham. By the !me the entrants got to Wyndham it was sweltering, most of them sought the shade of the trees at the race course and the planned field tests were reduced to one exercise because of the heat. The backup team had to deal with 3 casual!es and one rider who got totally lost (he was well on his way to Nightcaps before realising there was a problem). The run back to the Clubrooms was uneven+ul with the compe!tors looking forward to a long cold drink at the bar. It was clear in the early planning stages that catering for 140+ people was going to be a major challenge as that many could not be accommodated in one si=ng. Serving the food in two si=ng solved the problem along with a very efficient table arrangement thought up by Dave and Gerry. The real heroes of the night were the catering team lead by Margaret Pethick (it was her 70th Birthday), they were Yvonne Officer, Raewyn Birss, Raewyn Murphy, Denise McDowell , Jenny Sycamore, Bronwen McKay, Ken Officer and David Sycamore. The team served up two si=ng of excellent food despite two lengthy power cuts. With so many motorcycles compe!ng it is not surprising that a number of prizes and awards went to them, the overall winner was Peter Alderdice, from Auckland, on his 1954 Ariel Square 4. Thanks to Gerry and Howard, and their team, for organising such a great rally.

Southland Rally 2022 - 5 February
We were very lucky with the weather for the rally; it improved as the day went on & was very warm by the end of the day. The 46 vehicles & 1 motorbike weaved their way through central Southland ending up at Holt Park in Otautau for lunch & field tests.
Then back to the clubrooms for a beverage, followed by prizegiving (results on next page) and a lovely two course meal. We would like to acknowledge the hard work put in by Norma & Trevor Wilkey and their helpers – thank you!

Southland Rally 2021 - 6 February
On a cloudy but warm Saturday morning approx. 50 vehicles lined up in various positions at the Clubrooms awaiting briefing before starting off. On leaving the Clubrooms those who were competitive completed the time section. Once this was over we could travel at our own speed. Unfortunately, not long after the time section ended, we had our first casualty. A Model A developed fuel problems so the car was towed back to the Kennington Hall car park and they continued on their way in a borrowed car. A bit further down the road and no 2 casualty occurred. This time a motorbike and it too had developed fuel problems. It was safely loaded onto the backup trailer to continue its run of the course. By this time the clouds were clearing and it was becoming quite sunny and hot. We all eventually made it to the lunch stop at the Waikawa Hall. While we were consuming our lunch, the bucket was taken around for donations towards the use of the hall. In all, approx. $50-60 was raised. Once lunch break was over, we embarked on the field tests. There were 3 field tests in all, testing our skills in various ways. Once these were completed, we left travelling either back to the Clubrooms via the Southern Scenic Route or a more direct one. Unfortunately, on the way back to town no 3 casualty happened, this also being a fuel problem. It must have been the day for fuel whoops. We all gathered at the Clubrooms later that afternoon for a meal and Prizegiving. All In all, a grand day and since then we have had a couple of emails from those who ventured out for the first time what a brilliant day, scenery was great and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Southland Rally 2020 - 1 February
Jean booked Raewyn and myself in to drive her Wolsley 1964 6/60 in the rally. She had the car all polished and lunch packed along with table and chairs, reminding us that we needed to be there before 10.00. On arriving at the clubrooms in Otatara we all got a briefing on the day, and the times we had to leave, meaning not everyone could leave at once. A good number of members turned up for the run in many different types of vehicles and ages.
The day wasn’t at all too bad. The wind arrived mid-afternoon. The time trial was going to start towards the end of the run so we didn’t have to worry about that until we were well on. We set off, me in the driver seat and Jean
navigating, heading out of the clubrooms towards Dolamore Park, Gore via Kennington, Hedgehope and Waimumu. Even when a sign goes missing, everyone manages to arrive at the destination for lunch and the field test,
which was something new for us. We started our time trial at Millars Road. Jean had nominated 50 miles an hour which was far too fast so we will know better next time. Good job we had a little detour in to Charlton Road
along with many others.
There were three sections to complete in the field tests.
1) Throwing horseshoes from out of your car window onto a peg.
2) Putting golf balls into spouting pipe and catching them in a tin at the other end while all the time your car is moving along.
3) Place your front and back axles on a rope in a > shape on the ground. Also knowing the size and make off your tires. This challenge we completed with top marks.
About 2 oclock we headed back to town along the given route to the Club Rooms, where we had lovely meal of coldmeat and salads and a dessert. Following the meal there was the prize giving, which ended up quite
profitable for us. First in the 60 class field test. Overall winner post 60 class. First overall in the rally.
With no motoring problems, making new friends, a good day was had by all.
Congratulations and thanks to the members who organised the day. WELL DONE. Bruce & Raewyn Stuart, Jean Brown.

Southland Rally 2019
It all started on the 2nd of February. We get the wake up call from Dad “let’s go girls! Cars to get organised”. We had to met at the club rooms in Otatara for a briefing and to get our leaving times for the rally. My sister Kaitlyn and I were to leave at 10.22am, 8 minutes before Mum and Dad who were to leave at 10.30am. We set off on our first rally, me in the drivers seat full speed ahead! (30 mph) and Kaitlyn fully equipped with the essentials to get us to our destination for lunch! We choose 30 mph as our average speed that we would travel at; as it turns out with my spot on driving and Kaitlyn telling me to slow down every 3 seconds we came in 2 seconds off our true time of arrival!
After finishing the time trial we proceeded to follow the instructions that we were given to reach our destination (as by this time the time trial had taken it out of us and we were getting hungry). As we were driving, we were expecting Mum and Dad to pass us as they drive faster, little did we know they took a wrong turn and did their speed limit the whole way to lunch, not knowing that a sign on the side of the road that says ‘time trial ends’ actually means the time trial had finished! Next we had the field challenges. We let Mum and Dad go first in this one so we could get an idea of how it was to be done, unfortunately that did not go to plan and we were forced to figure it out by ourselves.
The first challenge was a rope on the ground in a > shape, the challenge was to get your front tire right on the rope and the back tire was to get as close to the rope as possible, the decision where to drive on the rope was the actual challenge, out of the blue, taking a wild guess Kaitlyn and I were smack bang on, both our wheels were on the rope!! Next challenge was to name 4 tools that are used in the shed to fix model A’s, Kaitlyn and I had absolutely no idea about tools as they were very old tools, so we had to bum out in this one. And last but not least our final challenge was to guess the length of the rope, we started off very low and then actually had a proper look, tried to measure it properly, we then came up with a size of 16.2 as it turns out we were close to this as well, with it being 16.27 we were 0.07 off the mark!
After all the challenges were complete we had the option of completing a fun challenge on the way home, this didn’t count towards anything so we decided to use it as a competition against Mum and Dad, this time Mum and Dad were glad to find out that they beat us!
We then had prize giving and dinner to finish off the night! Kaitlyn and I were very grateful to receive first place in the field challenges, first place in the time trial, first place overall and best lady drivers! It is fair to say that our first rally together in the old car was a good one and the first of many! We hope to be back next time to defend our title, with Kaitlyn having her turn to drive and hoping to win so her name can be on the trophies under mine. We are also going to give our parents some words of wisdom so that next time they can come second instead of third!
Thanks so much to the Vintage Car Club, Ray and Janet McCulloch. It was an amazing day and experience, we hope more younger people get involved in the car club in the future. Shannon and Kaitlyn Michelle

Southland Rally 2018
There were approx. 60 vehicles this year, including 3 motorbikes. We all left the clubrooms, one by one, before navigating our way through to our destination, the Browns Domain. It turned out to be not a bad day following the copious amount of rain we had just two days prior.
Following lunch, of course, came the field tests. They comprised of four parts, all challenging yet good fun. Our laugh for the day was the part with the spanner on a rope – the rope was to be held by the driver while the other end was attached to a stationary point. A spanner was attached half way along the rope. The aim was to not let the spanner touch the ground as you drove the circumference of the length of rope. Lets just say, driving in a circle is not our forte and an arm was almost lost out the window!
The BBQ and prize-giving followed in the evening, a good chance to catch up with everybody.
All in all, we enjoyed our day and would like to thank the Club, especially Ray and Janet for the extraordinary effort they put in to the day.

Southland Rally 2017
There were 62 entries for this rally, evenly split between the long route and the short route.
The long route was about 60 miles and the short route about 40 miles to the venue, the Glenham Community Centre. Unfortunately it had been too wet to go into the car park paddock at Maple Glen gardens – a shame.
As mentioned the lunch venue and end of rally was at the Glenham Community Centre, where it was just tight enough to get everybody parked and run the field tests.
The trophies were awarded back at the clubrooms prior to tea, which was a superbly presented BBQ- well done Tony, Sheryn and James.
As is usual none of this could have been possible without some dedicated teamwork: thanks to Trevor and Norma for mapping the routes and selecting the venue – excellent. Thanks to those that manned (or womanned) the end of the time sections and the field tests, Brilliant. Thanks all.

Southland Rally 2016
52 vehicles, including 3 motorcycles, lined up at the clubrooms for the start. There were two routes available for competitors, a 90km run for Veteran and Vintage and low power vehicles and a 210km run, including two stretches of gravel for the younger and bolder vehicles. The competitors on the long route were sent off first, followed by those on the short route. First away was Glynis McKenzie in her 1935 Austin on the long route. The last part of both runs was to the Dunsdale picnic ground, about 13km up a potholed gravel road in the Hokonui Hills.
The short route competitors started arriving just before 1pm and the long route competitors started arriving at about 2:30pm and the final competitor arrived an hour later. Ray Tressler’s Austin Seven broke down in the final run into the picnic ground, and was towed in, after the electrics were hot-wired it ran again and got him home.
The picnic ground was a great venue except it turned out to be "Sand-fly City". One question and 3 field tests were set up for competitors when they arrived. Although a long day it turned into a very good event, capped off with a great BBQ and a few drinks back at the clubhouse.
