Sport Canterbury works with national and regional sports organisations and education institutes to support coaching capability through high-quality coach development systems.
These systems consist of coaches who work directly with players, coach developers who train those coaches and coach developer trainers who educate the coach developers.
To develop those at each level, Sport Canterbury focuses on advocating for, supporting and delivering opportunities that create a long-term impact.
Coach developers play a crucial role in the initial formal training of coaches and how they are developed, supported and nurtured on the job.
Understanding where coach developers sit along the coach and athlete development continuum is useful. Coaches work with and develop athletes; coach developers develop the coaches; trainers develop the coach developers and master trainers train the trainers.
Sport Canterbury has developed flexible coach developer training modules to improve aspiring developers' understanding and basic competencies related to the concept. In addition, extension training focused on supporting the capability and confidence of existing coach developers is also available.
