Active Families

What is Active Families?

Active Families is a free programme designed for children aged 4 to 12 years and their families/whānau who would like support to improve their health and wellbeing through increased physical activity and healthy lifestyle choices.

The programme provides guidance, encouragement, and practical support to help families create sustainable healthy habits together. Working alongside an Active Families Advisor, families set achievable goals and develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to make positive lifestyle changes.

Active Families focuses on the whole family, recognising that lasting change is most successful when parents, caregivers, and children work together towards shared health and wellbeing goals.

How Active Families Can Support You

Our Active Families programme provides:

  • Individualised support to help families set and achieve realistic health and wellbeing goals
  • Education, encouragement, and ongoing guidance from an Active Families Advisor
  • Opportunities for families/whānau to participate in a variety of fun physical activities, games, and sports together
  • Activities that help build children's confidence, self-esteem, and social connections
  • Practical nutrition education, including healthy eating advice and ideas for affordable family meals
  • Connections to local sports clubs, recreation opportunities, and community services
  • Information about local events and opportunities to stay active within the community
  • Ongoing support to help families develop sustainable, long-term healthy lifestyle habits

Throughout the programme, parents, caregivers, and children work collaboratively with their Active Families Advisor to make positive changes in their everyday lives. By focusing on physical activity, healthy eating, and family wellbeing, Active Families helps families build a strong foundation for a healthier and more active future.

IMPORTANT

We’re currently experiencing a high number of referrals, so we’ve introduced a waiting list for new ones. We still welcome new referrals, and our team will be in touch with whānau for an initial chat. However, we don’t have capacity right now to actively work with new whānau for around 2–3 months.
