Priority Communities and Event Support

Help create active communities and deliver unforgettable events across Southland.

At Active Southland, our vision is Everyone Active Every Day. We connect, enable and support Southlanders to live more active lives and we're looking for an energetic and community-focused person to join our team in a fixed-term role as our Priority Communities & Events Support

This is a unique opportunity to combine community development with hands-on event delivery. You'll play an important role supporting some of Southland's best-loved events, including Mitre 10 Mega Invercargill Tough Kid, Wensley's Cycles Surf to City and the ILT Southland Sports Awards, while also helping communities across Southland and Gore increase participation in play, active recreation and sport.

Working alongside community groups, schools, clubs, councils and other partners, you'll help build capability, support local initiatives, connect organisations with funding opportunities and contribute to projects that reduce barriers to participation. You'll also assist with event planning, supplier coordination, community activations and insights gathering.

Southland Hockey Development Officer

About the role

To oversee and deliver school and community hockey programmes for the Southland Hockey Association, including school competitions, representative hockey, player and coach development, while supporting participation growth across the Southland region. Based out of Southland Hockey offices ILT Turf Invercargill, however, travel will be required throughout the Invercargill and Eastern Southland Hockey Associations catchment areas. You may be required to travel to other regions for training and development opportunities. This role may require regular evening and weekend work during the hockey season.

Key responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with IHA in running all school competitions including Web and social media notices, draws, results and scorecards and overseeing all Secondary, Junior High and Primary games throughout the competition

  • Manage all IHA School Competitions (Secondary, Junior and Primary)

  • Administer and deliver In-School programmes on behalf of the Invercargill Hockey Association

  • Administer and assist with delivery of U13 programmes

  • Assist with coordinating and delivery of any Hockey NZ Coaches courses assigned to the Southland area

  • Administer, coordinate, applicable development and representative courses at U13, U16 and U18 level

  • Organise and deliver Have a Go Days, Gala Days and Open Days as required

  • Work collaboratively with National Sports Trust (Active Southland) for sport development within the Southland region including holiday programmes and coach development programmes and workshops in primary and secondary schools

  • Assist Southland Cricket with up to 10 hours a week of work in the off season.

  • Maintain accurate records and time sheets to fulfill accountability requirements of Southland Hockey funders, Invercargill Hockey Association, Eastern Southland Hockey Association and Hockey New Zealand

  • Maintain website, social media and notice boards if required

About you

  • MUST be a competent user of Microsoft Office, Social Media platforms and other computer systems

  • Strong communication and relationship management skills

  • Full driver licence preferred

  • Hockey skills/knowledge preferred

  • Business or Sport Management qualification would be advantageous but not essential
