Do you want to contribute to the well-being of individuals, whānau, and communities across Southland through a local Governance role?

Active Southland are seeking skilled and engaged trustees to join our Board as we embark on an exciting new strategic period in 2025. As a Trustee you'll have the opportunity to influence the great work we do in promoting active lifestyles and supporting our vision of "Everyone Active Every Day."

Founded in 1990, Active Southland is dedicated to empowering our community through physical activity. We are committed to overcoming barriers, promoting equity, and ensuring everyone in Southland can lead an active, fulfilling life. Our collaborative, community-led approach allows us to create impactful opportunities for all, making it easier for Southlanders to embrace active living.

The Role:

As an Active Southland Trustee, you’ll play a key role in driving our strategic plan, overseeing management's progress, and championing the work we do across the community. You’ll embrace the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and foster partnerships that build an inclusive, connected Southland.


Key Responsibilities:

  • - Advocate for equity of access and opportunity, promoting partnerships between Tangata Whenua and Tangata Tiriti.
  • - Set objectives, strategy, and goals for Active Southland.
  • - Monitor and evaluate the performance of the CEO and organisation.
  • - Develop board policies and expectations for management.
  • - Risk identification and management.
  • - Champion the profile and impact of Active Southland.
  • - Pursue strategic opportunities to grow our reach and influence.
  • - Support our commitment to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

What We’re Looking For:

We seek candidates from all backgrounds who are passionate about community well-being. We would value Trustees with:

  • - Cultural competency and/or lived experience in te ao Māori.
  • - Financial acumen and an understanding of financial statements, budgets, and risks.
  • - A strategic mindset that can promote the organisation's long-term success.
  • - Commercial experience and skills, particularly in finance, HR and risk management.
  • - Connections to diverse communities across Southland..
  • - An active and thoughtful contributor in meetings, with sound judgement and strong interpersonal skills.
  • - An understanding of Sport, Active Recreation, Play or Health.
  • - An understanding of, or experience in, stakeholder governance.

The ability to build and maintain effective relationships.


Commitment:

The voluntary role involves 6-8 meetings annually, each lasting 3-4 hours, with occasional strategy sessions and Board Development opportunities.
