ABOUT THE HAKA...

In 2017, our Stokes Valley Junior Rhinos Chairman had a dream... to have our own Junior Rugby Club haka!

It was to reflect the rejuvenation of the club, enhance the drive, determination, and perseverance of our players, and give them all something they can proudly call their own!

Kept largely under wraps, our committee members approached a few people to see if they would compose a haka for our club. We were very fortunate and honoured to have Kapa Haka extraordinaire, Matua Poutawa Whaitiri accept.

Matua Whaitiri composed the haka, choreographed the actions, then ran several practice sessions with our SV Rhino U12 players and coaches until he was satisfied that they had correctly grasped the words, the actions, and their meaning.

Our U12s held several haka practices (in secret) until they perfected it, and at Prizegiving that year, they unveiled the haka.
