BMX is a summer sport, with the main club and racing season running from Sept - April. This is also the main membership period for our club. Members are also welcome to use the track during the winter months, as long as the track is firm and dry, and the "track closed" signs are not up.
To join Te Awamutu BMX Club you will need:
A transponder (excludes striders and sprockets) - get this direct from BMXNZ here
A bike
A full face helmet
A long sleeved shirt, pants + gloves
Closed in shoes
Ideally elbow and knee pads
BMX bikes are split into two classes, 20 inch and 24 inch (also called a cruiser).
BMX bikes are made to be strong, but also light meaning they are fast on the BMX tracks. The tyres on the kids BMX bikes are thin helping with keeping the bike light and fast.
These sizes refer to the wheel diameter of the bike. There is a bike size (Micro-Mini) that actually has 18” wheels for small children. These bikes are used in the 20” classes.

Yes, you can hire some equipment from the club. We have BMX bikes, gloves and helmets which can be hired for the club night. These bikes cannot be taken away and are only to be used on the club night. The cost is $3 per bike. This equipment is primarily for people who want to come and give BMX a go.
If you and/or your child continues to ride, we recommend getting your own bikes and gear. There are shops in the Waikato that sell BMX equipment such as:
There are also Facebook pages that are great for picking up second-hand BMX bikes and gear. Some of these are as follows:
We have a 100% voluntary committee. You can read more about our committee members on our about page HERE.

A transponder is a timing device attached to your bike and is required if you race in any national scheduled races. A transponder is required as part of your BMXNZ licence. BMXNZ requires each of your bikes being raced to have its own transponder so if you ride more than 1 bike, you need a separate transponder for each. You can purchase transponders directly from BMXNZ HERE.

There are several different season membership options and your TA BMX membership fee includes the cost of the BMXNZ licence. We apply to BMXNZ on your behalf, and the new licences are issued starting in January.
If you join as a new member between Oct and Dec, you will also need a half year licence. This is included in your membership fee.
BMXNZ licence holders can attend club nights at Te Awamutu BMX and other clubs and also participate in BMXNZ weekend race meetings at clubs throughout New Zealand, including nationals qualifiers, and major meets such as the Nationals and North & South Island Titles.
An NQM is a Nominated Qualifying Meeting. This means that a race meeting has been nominated by BMXNZ as a meeting where the rider can compete to take a step in qualifying for Nationals. Each completed NQM meeting is one NQM, and riders need a MINIMUM of four NQMs to qualify for Nationals.
