The officers of TRIYA, coaches or other persons assisting with the conduct of this training do not accept any responsibility in respect of any injury or loss to person or property that may be sustained by reason of participation in the sailing academy .
Reasonable safety measures are in place at the Sailing Club but there is some risk involved and the sailor will need to exercise common sense and self-discipline, and take heed of the instructions of the coach.
The coach will check on the weather forecast at about midday. Wind is normally the biggest issue. If the forecast is over 20 knots, it is probable there will be no on the water sailing and there will be a classroom session or training on the ‘hard’. A text message will be sent to advise if this is the case.
Each sailor needs to have adequate suitable clothing for sailing. Wellington sea water is generally not warm. Most days the three factors of cold, wet, and wind are in play.
Recommended clothing includes:
Afloat: 2 x polypropelene or woolen shirt / jersey, wet suit, shoes soft sole, beanie or cap (head warmer and eye shade), sunscreen (buoyancy aid and windproof jacket is supplied)
Ashore: towel, warm windproof change of clothes
Some of the greatest risk occurs when a person is in the water. Sailors need to be aware of what to do when they find themselves in the water. Sailors need to look out for each other and be aware of what is happening with their partner or other boats around them.
Collisions between boats or with fixed objects should be avoided, if at all possible. A skipper will be primarily responsible for the outcome of any collision, with damage charges up to $500.
Any physical injury needs to be bought to the coach’s attention as soon as possible.
On arrival, sailors need to sign in the register book. On departure they need to inform the coach who they have transport with and that they are leaving.
View the TRIYA Risk Management Plan below:
It is accepted that wear and tear will cause some damage in the course of a season to boats, e.g. a broken stay can occur and cause damage to a mast and or sail.
The skipper and crew have some responsibility for their own safety and the care of the boat they are sailing, e.g. Stays and safety clips need to be checked by the skipper, before launching. The rudder stock safety clip needs to be checked by the skipper before launching. Collision with another boat or fixed object (such as wharf or ramp) is not acceptable.
If an incident occurs where there is damage :-
• Make an assessment and try to minimise further damage as soon as possible.
• Inform the coach as soon as practical.
A report will be written on the damage/incident. This will be made by the skipper and crew before they leave. Be aware that both the skipper and the crew will be billed up to a total of $500 if damage occurs. TRIYA does carry some hull insurance.
One of the main difficulties with boat damage is that the vessel is not available for use by the next group. So if a boat is out of action, the sailors responsible for the damage may not be able to use a boat the next time.
Deliberate damage to TRIYA gear or Evans Bay property, may result in a sailor being refused instruction. No fees will be reimbursed in this case.
All payments are to be paid in full at the time of registration. This payment includes a non-refundable transaction fee.
Two weeks' notice is required where a participant changes their mind or decides to withdraw. If a request to withdraw is made more than 2 weeks (14 days) prior to the first session of the program a refund for the full registration fee less transaction fees incurred will be provided.
If a withdrawal is made within 14 days of the course beginning or after the program has started a pro-rated refund will be provided less 2 weeks (and transaction fees incurred).
If a refund is requested for exceptional circumstances e.g. serious injury or illness that precludes the participant from being able to attend TRIYA may waive the notice period at the discretion of the Board.
As soon as you know that you/your child will not be attending, contact the TRIYA team via email to request a refund. Please let us know why they will not be attending as this will help determine a full or partial refund at the discretion of the Board.
Please note – refunds must be approved by the board and may take several weeks for the refund to be paid.
