Code of Conduct & Ethics for Parents and Spectators

As a parent/guardian and spectator of netball or netball related activities held by, or under the support of Netball New Zealand, or North Otago Netball Centre, you are encouraged to meet the following requirements in regard to your conduct during any such activity or event:

  •  Applaud good play by players on both teams.
  • Players learn by taking risks and making mistakes - encourage and support this.
  • Teach players that effort is as important as victory, so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment.
  • If players are interested, encourage and support them to play but avoid forcing players to play if reluctant. Remember players are involved in netball for their enjoyment not yours.
  • Recognise and value the importance of coaches and other volunteers who give their time and resources to provide netball - they deserve your support.
  • Encourage players to play to the rules of the game and respect umpires’ decisions.
  • If you disagree with an official, raise the issue through appropriate channels rather than questioning an official’s judgement and honesty in public.
  • Any kind of bullying or harassment is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

Code of Conduct & Ethics for Players

As a player in netball or netball related activities held by, or under the support of Netball New Zealand, or North Otago Netball Centre, you are encouraged to meet the following requirements in regard to your conduct during any such activity or event:

  • Appreciate and co-operate with your coach, team-mates and officials. There would be no game without them.
  •  Take responsibility for your own performance, on and off the court.
  • Be a good sport - cheer all good play from both your team and the opposition.
  • Play according to the rules of netball and the principles of fair-play. Control your temper - any verbal misbehaviour or deliberate contact is unacceptable.
  •  Never argue with an umpire. If you are concerned, talk to your coach or captain.
  •  Any kind of bullying or harassment is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

Code of Conduct & Ethics for Coaches and Managers

As a Coach or Manager of netball or netball related activities held by, or under the support of Netball New Zealand, or North Otago Netball Centre, you are encouraged to meet the following requirements in regard to your conduct during any such activity or event:

  • Be fair, considerate and honest with players. 
  • All players need to be treated with respect, so they enjoy a positive experience and feel encouraged in their development.  Always aim to provide a safe environment for training at facilities and in competition. 
  • Your own preparation and presentation should reflect high standards. Always provide a training program which is planned and sequential and seek guidance from North Otago Netball if you require it. 
  • Operate within the rules and spirit of the game. 
  • Ensure you display control, respect, dignity and professionalism to all involved with the sport - this includes opponents, coaches, officials, administrators, the media, parents and spectators. If you act as a role model for players, it is much more likely they will use appropriate language and demonstrate good judgement in all situations.
  •  Within the context of the activity, treat everyone equally regardless of sex, ethnicity, race, religion, or sexual orientation.
  •  Maintain appropriate records, and work with North Otago Netball to maintain or improve your current coaching accreditation. We wish to help you seek continual improvement through performance appraisal and feedback.
  •  Be alert to any forms of abuse directed towards your players from other sources, whilst they are in your care. 
  • Be cautious about any physical contact between management and children. Where it is appropriate, always be guided by the principle that any physical contact should meet the physical or emotional need of the child.
  •  Any kind of bullying or harassment is unacceptable and will not be tolerated
