Head Coach Note:

Waihora Rallies Explained

  • Parents - you are of course very welcome and encouraged to observe your rider from the sidelines but unless you are with a lead rein rider/pony please do not interfere or comment during the coaching session.  As tempting as it might be to advise your rider to 'put your heels down' or 'shorten your reins' - please don't.  There are always plenty of jobs to do around the place if you find the temptation too great!
  • Rallies are usually held every 2nd Sunday of the month, February - December.
  • Waihora has one full day as their rally day.  If both morning and afternoon coaching sessions are attended then this will be noted in the rally book as 2 rallies.  Some clubs hold two rallies a month typically in the morning.
  • November rally is typically our own Cup Day.
  • If it rains on a rally day we still go ahead with an unmounted HM rally held in the clubrooms and finishing after a shared lunch. These are wonderful opportunities to get HM certificate work covered and of course, become better equipped to make good choices for your horse/pony.

Rally Format

  • Riders are grouped according to either the certificate they are working towards or if they do not wish to work through the certificates, the group for their riding ability.
  • Each group has a coach who will plan the lesson in advance; with the aim of teaching the tasks on the cards,  leading to the exam for that level.
  • The rally plan for the Year is emailed to all members after the AGM in February. The riders and parents will know what to expect and also what they will miss if they can’t attend the rally and what they should catch up on in their own time ready for the next month’s lessons.
  • All riders should own the appropriate pony club manual (available from the clubroom) Parents, please help your rider to learn and practice ready for each rally.
  • The rally cards will be at the clubrooms on rally days. The riders may take them to their own qualified coaches, but, they often get lost when taken away and then the rider has to start a new card at the beginning. NZPCA is very strict on the card system! They must be brought to the rally so the coaches can sign them. A good idea would be to photograph the card each rally day so you can keep track of where your rider is up to, and what sort of things they should be learning.
