Equipment for Beginners:
A useful start to personal equipment necessary would be:

  • • track pants
  • • t shirt
  • • flat-soled non-marking shoes. Squash or basketball court shoes are ideal
  • • A glove.  Waikato Swords generally does not provide gloves for beginners, so it might also be an idea to bring a glove of some description. You only need one for your dominant hand, just about anything will do, for example, gardening or golf gloves would be fine.

Waikato Swords will endeavour to provide beginners with the use of a club visual foil (ie, non electric), a jacket and a mask. The type of skills training that follows will be based on the gear available at the time.

Buying Equipment:
As participation in the club goes on (e.g. after a school term) it is appropriate that individuals start to purchase their own fencing equipment to enable further new fencers to utilise our limited club resources. A suggested priority of gear purchase and approximate price:    foil ($55-70), glove ($30-40), mask ($120-140), jacket ($120-150), plastron (under-jacket half-jacket, $40-50), chest protector if appropriate ($30-50), shoes ($130ish), socks (white, knee-length), breeches ($80-120). You should have a good kit of visual equipment and have used it for a at least a year before launching into electrical gear, which opens up a new world of potential purchases.
