WAIMARINO PONY CLUB (WPC)

The Waimarino Pony Club was formed in 1955. Branches in the past have included Orautoha, Karioi, Mangaeturoa, Valley Road, Waiouru, Ohakune and Raetihi.

In May 2012, the remaining two Branches, Raetihi and Ohakune, amalgamated to form the stand-alone Waimarino Pony Club (a Club with no Branches). On amalgamation, all resources were combined and the Waimarino A&P Showgrounds became the Club’s base for rallies and competitions.

The Club has had a remarkable history of success - 3 ‘A’ Certificate holders, three Inter Pacific team members, and an International Games team member. Two Adult members have been Managers of overseas teams, Presidents of the NZPCA and have recently been awarded Life Membership of NZPCA.

Apart from the usual rallies and competitions at Club, Area and National level, camps and treks have been a regular feature. Being in a hilly rural area farm treks have been common and helped build the confidence of many a rider, which in turn has helped with cross country riding. Our focus remains to teach youngsters to enjoy safe riding and the good care of their ponies.  Many coaches have taken part in the ECTP programme much to their benefit and their riders, with adult member, Evelyn Cooper attaining H level status.

In 1983/84—a Cross country course on Roke’s property was built, a huge asset to the Club and it has enabled many riders to gain experience and go on to compete in Club and Area competitions and NZPCA Championships. The course has been dismantled due to flood damage. The Clubs mobile jumps are at the showgrounds!
