Ponies with the words Schoolmaster, Bombproof, Been there done that, First Ridden, Beginners are what you would look for.

Never buy a hot blooded horse for a beginner e.g. Thoroughbreds or Arabs

I highly recommend an older horse (over 15years) for a beginner as they generally have more experience and are more relaxed in most situations.

Never buy on the first look, arrange to go back and ride again in a different location or doing different things. Make sure you take someone to give a 2nd opinion.

I would recommend a vet check if spending over $5,000 on your horse or if for competition.

Ask to talk with the head coach at pony club, the previous owner also their vet to see to confirm if they have had any call outs/issues with the horse.

Questions to ask on the phone:
  • how old is the rider who usually rider
  • what level is the rider experience etc..
  • when was it last ridden
  • how often is it usually ridden
  • does it float
  • how is it for the farrier
  • what height of jumping does it compete at
  • has it been to pony club
  • how is it on the roads
  • how is it with other horses
  • paddocked alone or in a herd
  • has it ever had a foal before
  • when was the vet last out
reconfirm again on the day and refer to your notes to make sure they match up.

When you pick up
  • when wormed last
  • hooves last done
  • vaccination card
  • registration cards (ESNZ, Breed, Society)
