Frequently Asked Questions
Wellington College Cricket

Why do I need to register and pay fees so early?

You must register early as we typically have between 6-7 Junior Year 9 teams. Skills assessment and selections are targeted to be done on 28 January 2024 for incoming 2024 Year 9 Students.

Selections for all other year groups are undertaken in December. The college has policies that include sports fees must be paid before your son's trials and also that students shouldn't miss out on being involved in extra-curricular activities due to financial challenges.
The school can organise for fees to be paid off.  Please contact the School accounts department on 04 802 2520 if you would like to discuss payment options for cricket fees.

If I register for Wellington College Cricket, will I still play for my junior club in term 4 2023?

Yes. This registration for College Cricket runs during Term 1 & Term 4 2024.

What cricket fees apply?

$200 per player.

Coaching team fees?

These fees will be confirmed in due course once the cricket budget is confirmed.

Preseason tournament fees?

Some high-performance teams play preseason games and these are self-funded.

Traditional tournament fees?

Wellington College has several Traditional sporting fixtures played against other secondary schools. There may be a separate fee for these.

There will be one uniform used through the club below the first XI. It is a gold shirt and black cricket trousers that can be purchased from the uniform shop.

Cricket headwear cost?

Junior 1 Black and Gold team members are required to purchase a WC Cricket Bumble Bee cap, other Year 9 teams can wear either the cricket Bumble Bee cap or the college cricket cap (baseball cap style). Both these are purchased through the uniform shop.
All players are also able to wear a plain black wide-brimmed cricket hat for extra sun protection, purchased from a sports stockist, eg. Kilbirnie Sports have them available. They are not to have any other club or NZ cricket logos on them.

What's Different in College Cricket Compared with Junior Club Cricket?

There are a few differences between college cricket and junior club cricket environments that you may find helpful to be aware of:

  • While the club is run almost entirely by volunteer parents, the club and every team requires and depends on support and assistance from parents in a variety of ways.

  • The type of parental involvement required at the College level is different to that required by junior cricket clubs (ie years 8 and below).  Also, the parental involvement required can differ between teams. This can be confusing.

  • In every grade parental involvement is not required or acceptable with selection decisions. Further, in most grades, parental involvement is not required with the setting of batting and bowling orders. However, in some of the teams in the lower grades, and where there is less involvement or oversight by a professional coach, some input by managers is required.

  • The different requirements can be explained to you by the relevant grade convenor. Overall, however, where a team has a professional coach or is overseen by a professional coach, less parental input is required.

  • There is strong coaching from qualified professional cricket coaches is provided for as many teams as possible.

  • Cricket is played for a calendar year (Term 1 & Term 4).

  • Except for T20, cricket registration is for the calendar year. T20 registrations are undertaken twice a year for Term 1 & Term 4 half seasons.

  • T20 teams in each grade are available depending on player numbers. If a T20 team is not available in the player's age group, the grade convenor will work with players and their parents to give other playing options.

  • The College Cricket Competition is run by an organisation called College Sport Wellington.

  • Games are generally played on school grounds.

  • The Wellington College Cricket Club (WCCC) operates within the Wellington College environment and works within the school's requirements for registration and payment processes, along with communication avenues e.g. school club website, sports noticeboard, and Wellington College Phone App.

  • Payments of cricket fees are made through the College payment system and College bank account.

  • College Sport Senior Cricket Teams cover students in Years 11, 12 and 13.  Which is different to the College’s reference to senior students being those in Years 12 and 13.

What is the same?

Like junior clubs, Wellington College Cricket Club has to budget and cover its expenses to run cricket at WC. The cost of balls for 20 cricket teams is significant with a new ball required for each game.  Coaching is another major expense.

The costs of running the cricket club are met by a combination, of direct player fees, fundraising initiatives and grant applications from other organisations.
