Cross Country

Welcome to Wellington College Cross Country.

The Cross Country team had another successful year in 2023. dominating local competition across the grades with Ben Brunner taking out the CSW Individual senior title. This year at nationals WC won silver in both 3 and 6 to count at U 16 level and silver in individual, and Gold in 3 and 6 to count at Year 9.

In school there is a traditional race for all Y9 students up the infamous Gutbuster trail. .  In the region we participate in the College Sport Wellington championships as well as relay events organised by other bodies. Unlike many colleges, we expect students who wish to race with the College to train with the College, although they are also welcome to compete for a club.  This is to develop team spirit and to ensure that runners peak for the prestigious secondary schools’ events.

Events this year include: Karori Relays, Trentham Championships, Nationals and the Traditional Round the Lake in Whanganui. Some runners will benefit from joining another code, particularly athletics, where training and competition do not clash.

TRAINING: 7am Tuesday and Thursday in the Sports Centre plus other runs.  Training commences at the end of March   Training takes place whatever the weather, and also continues in the holidays, but with a later start.

UNIFORM: School singlet and shorts for racing. Visible non-uniform gear for training. Spiked shoes are helpful. The college has some pairs for loan, but committed runners may wish to buy their own.
