Why Team Sport Matters: Supporting Girls Aged 8–12 Through Netball

At West Warriors Netball Club, we believe that sport is more than just a game — it's a foundation. For girls aged 8 to 12, the years before adolescence are a pivotal period. Positive team sport experiences during these years can spark lifelong participation, nurture confidence, and build strong, supportive communities.

Here’s why we think investing in girls in this age group is so important — and how we’re committed to making every season a meaningful one.

The Data
By age 17, young women spend 28% less time being active than boys (Sport NZ). Social pressures, lack of confidence, and feeling “not good enough” drive many girls away from organised sport — and COVID made it even harder to stay involved. The solution? Start early.

Why Team Sport Matters for Girls 8–12

  • Health & Fitness: Builds strong bones, muscles, and heart health, while establishing lifelong movement habits. For many Kiwi kids, organised sport is their main way to stay active (Sport NZ, Active NZ Snapshot 2023).
  • Confidence & Well-Being: Small wins and team support boost self-esteem and resilience. Fun, connection, and growth keep girls coming back (Sport NZ interviews & surveys).
  • Social Skills & Belonging: Team sport teaches communication, leadership, and empathy, and creates a sense of community away from screens. Clubs connect girls with peers, mentors, and role models.

The Numbers

  • Girls’ participation (ages 5–17) is lower than boys, with some ethnic groups showing bigger gaps (Sport NZ, Girls & Young Women Profile).
  • In 2023, 46% of girls in secondary school played sport, compared to 53% of boys (Active NZ Snapshot 2023).
  • Local examples prove culture matters: in Otago, ~60% of girls play school sport — far above the national average (~43%) (Sport NZ).

Bottom Line: Girls’ engagement can improve with supportive, welcoming clubs and schools. Positive environments and early participation set the stage for lifelong sport and confidence.

How We Do It at West Warriors

At West Warriors, we aim to deliver a positive, inclusive, and enjoyable experience for our players. Here’s how we try to put the research into practice:

Fun first

  • We prioritise enjoyment over winning.
  • Every girl gets meaningful time on court.
  • We mix drills with games, and variation to keep things fresh.

Developmental focus

  • Rather than pushing performance too early, we emphasise skill development, movement literacy, and physical confidence.
  • We run drills that build agility, coordination, spatial awareness — foundational skills that will help whether or not a player becomes elite.

Supportive coaching

  • Our coaches are encouraged to give positive feedback, normalise mistakes, and foster a culture of peer encouragement.

Role models & visibility

  • We invite premier players, coaches etc to come talk or run sessions, so our younger players can see “what’s possible.”

Call to Our Community

Parents, caregivers, neighbours — your support is vital. Encourage girls to try, stay, and speak up when something doesn’t feel right. Our club’s goal is to offer a place where your daughters can grow, belong, and flourish — whether they stay in sport for life or carry forward the confidence, friendships, and skills they build here.

If you’re reading this as someone considering joining us, we’d love to welcome you. We believe every girl deserves a positive sporting experience — to feel strong, seen, and capable.

Let’s continue building a community on and off the court.
