Youthtown and Play It Strange Partnership: Recording dreams made real 🎵

 LATEST NEWS

Since 2022, Youthtown’s partnership with Play It Strange has been about creating a platform where young voices are heard. This year’s recording scholarships backed five standout finalists from the Play It Strange National Year 9–11 School Songwriting Competition, giving each the rare chance to record and master their original song in a professional studio environment. Together, we’re empowering young artists to realise their potential, celebrating their achievements by sharing their music and stories.

Sienna Fitzgerald (Northcote College), the overall competition winner, recorded “Sweetness” at Auckland’s BIG FAN with producer Aubrie Mitchell. It was a full family creative day with her Dad layering electric guitar and bass alongside Seinna’s Mum who meticulously coached her vocals into a polished, intimate pop gem. Hear it on Spotify.

A student from St Andrew’s College (Christchurch), Violet McInnes recorded her Play It Strange Junior Songwriting Competition track “Hating on Love” with producer/musician Chris Wethey. Competition judge CHAII praised its “powerful” pre-chorus, strong flow and “lovely melodies.” Listen on Spotify.

South Auckland duo John Tolutau & Eli Tongia from Southern Cross Campus crafted “Whole” at Kueva Productions. “Whole” is a bilingual, culture affirming anthem about pride and identity, with John on guitar/bass and sings; and Eli on vocals and beat production. It’s a warm, luminous cut that urges listeners to embrace every part of themselves. Listen on Spotify.

From Taupō-n‑ui-a‑-‑Tia College, Sienna Storm recorded “Autumn Leaves” with producer Vince Harder (known for his contributions to “Everything” with PMoney‑). Judge Georgia Lines felt the emotion in every line and the result is a cinematic‑ ballad you can hear on Spotify.

And then there’s the five-piece band: Alpha of the Hour from Papatoetoe High School. The band included Ayaan (vocals), Bradley (bass), SitaRain (drums), Hinata (keys), Lixhay (guitar). Together they recorded “Promise (I’ll Find A Way)” at Parachute Studios with Noah Page. It’s an uplifting, heart-on-sleeve promise to keep moving forward. Play it on Spotify.

These five recordings capture what our partnership is designed to do: empower young artists, celebrate their work, and connect audiences to the next generation of New Zealand music. We look forward to supporting five more young people through our continued support the 2026 Play It Strange National Year 9–11 School Songwriting Competition.
