Auckland Pétanque Association Incorporated (APA) is the democratic alliance of all clubs in Auckland that came together in 1994 to promote pétanque in the region.

We are an incorporated society, holding Annual General Meetings and providing annual reports.

Our aims are:

  • To foster the game of Pétanque in the Auckland Region.
  • Co-ordinate coaching support for the development of members.
  • Arrange and supervise Regional competitions.
  • Promote participation in and support for National events.
  • Support the New Zealand Pétanque Association in its attaining of its objects.
  • Promote the participation in and development of Pétanque in community groups, special needs groups and youth.

The APA committee is the ruling body for the Region and is made up of an elected President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary with all clubs providing a representative for the committee.  Each club has 1 vote.  The committee meets monthly to manage financial affairs, interpret local rules, organise tournaments and liaise with the National body, Petanque New Zealand (PNZ).

Clubs affiliate to APA on request and by payment of a small annual subscription per member.  This fee covers the cost of our website and general expenses which we keep to a minimum as we’re all volunteers.  Funds are raised from tournament entry fees and after costs are deducted, this money finances events and Auckland players competing in international tournaments.

Once affiliated to APA clubs then affiliate to PNZ by payment of an annual fee of per member.  This enables all members to participate in all tournaments and events in both the Auckland Region and Nationally.

Where facilities permit, Auckland plays within the rules of the Federation Internationale de Pétanque et Jeu Provençal (FIPJP), the world governing body of pétanque.

Auckland holds several regional tournaments each year (Singles/Doubles/Triples/Senior Doubles/ Women’s Doubles & Men’s Triples), an inter club league, midweek seniors and friendly tournaments. Each club has the opportunity to host such events, depending on the suitability of the venue.

Each Auckland club is entitled to hold their own tournament during the season and the format is up to the host club.  These are advertised on the website calendar and by email from either the club or APA secretary.  Entry fees for tournaments are usually $5 – $10. Also, clubs around the country hold annual events that have become very popular over the years and are attended by players from all over both islands. There are no age limits but under-13s need to have a parent or guardian with them.

Minimum numbers required to form a club would be 6.
