Super 8 Badminton Preview

Gisborne Boys High School are hosting the Annual Super 8 Badminton Competition at the Badminton Centre 134 Roebuck Road on Thursday from 8.30am to 6pm. and Friday from 8.30am to 1pm.

Super 8 Competitions were formed in 1997 and as quoted “the New Zealand Super Eight group of schools incorporates the eight boys' high schools from their respective provincial cities of the central North Island. The first sporting competitions were sponsored by Canterbury International and commenced in 1998, involving rugby and cricket. Since that time, the Super Eight concept has grown to include not only 10 sports competitions, but also a cultural festival and professional development programmes for management staff and curriculum teachers.”

Gisborne Boys High School have been involved since the early years being placed 2nd in 2002, winning in 2003, 2nd in 2004, from 2005 to 2008 they did not compete. 2009 they returned to the competition and have competed every year including 2017, missing 2018 and returning this year with a younger team.

This is the second time Gisborne Boys High School has hosted the competition and they are hoping the local area will show their support by coming and watch some of the matches. There are some top NZ ranked junior players from out of the district, exciting matches to the level we haven’t seen locally in juniors for a few years.

Supporters are welcome to come and see some top badminton.
