Super Veterans Badminton 2019

Eastland Super Veterans Badminton Team recently travelled to Auckland for the final rounds of their 2019 Inter-Association Super Veterans Division 2 badminton competition.

The Eastland team was members were Kevin Lee (Gisborne Badminton Club), Ron Prebble, Kevin Taylor, Linda White, Annabel Riwaka and Ruth Ledger (all from the Patutahi Club) and Matheus Batlajeri, (on loan from Manawatu) and Lee Ingram (on loan from Auckland).

The competition included the top four teams from the Division 2 Group A playing against the teams from Group B. As Eastland was placed 3rd in their competition they had to play the 4th placed team from Group A – Auckland 2. They would then have to play the winner or loser of the playoff Waikato 3rd in Group A and Hawkes Bay 4th in Group B.

Against Auckland Taylor and Batlajeri lost their first came narrowly 18-21, reversed the score winning 21-14 in the second but couldn’t maintain their momentum and lost 16-21. Lee and Batlajeri played skilfully to win their first game 24-22, they maintain the lead in the second and took the match with a 21-16.win. Prebble and Lee struggled from the beginning and lost in two games.  In the women’s doubles Ledger and Riwaka showed determination in the first game, winning 21-17, the lost the second 18-21 and let the third get away losing 13-21. White and Ledger were no match for the Auckland pairing and lost in two. White and Riwaka lost their first game narrowly, refocussed and took the next 21-17 and comfortably won the last game 21-11. 

In the mixed doubles Taylor and Ledger worked hard to outwit their opponents but lost in two games.  Lee and Riwaka combined well to win in two games.  Prebble and White took their first game 21-12, let the opposition dominate in the second, but were able to take the lead in the third winning 21/10. The tie result was Auckland 2 won 5 matches to 4.

By virtue of the draw in the afternoon Eastland had to play Hawkes Bay again, as they had lost to Waikato. They recently played Hawkes Bay and had defeated 5 matches to 4. 

Taylor and Batlajeri struggled to get their rhythm and lost in two games. Taylor and Prebble played consistently and were able to narrowly win the first game 21-19 and dominated the second winning 21-13. Lee & Prebble took a while to settle losing the 21-14, the came back in the second 21-18. Third became quite a tussle with both sides showing some brilliant play and then letting the opposition dominant, eventually the Gisborne pairing took the third 24-22. In the women’s doubles Ledger and Riwaka show their determination from the start and were able to hold of their opposition to win narrowly 21-17, 21-18.’A new partnership Ledger and Lee Ingram from Auckland continue the winning form and won in two close games 21-19. 21-13.

White and Riwaka lost their first game 18-21, refocussed and took the second narrowly 21-19 before letting Hawkes Bay dominate the third with a 21-13 loss.  

Batlajeri and Riwaka set the scene by winning their match in two very close games. Lee and Ingram a new combination followed suit, dominating from the beginning and winning in two. With luck on Hawkes Bay side Prebble and White lost their first game fairly easily, they refocussed and were able to take the winning points 27-25 as the game seesawed, with both sides having the opportunity to win. Hawkes Bay dominated the final game winning 21-12. The final score line Eastland took the tie 6 - 3.

The team’s 2019 season has unfortunately finished now.

 Preveiw Super Veterans Badminton 2019

Badminton Eastland travel to Auckland this weekend for the Division Playoffs of the 2019 Super Veterans Division Inter-Association Division 2B Competition.

 After two weekends of competition Eastland was placed third in their Group, so will be playing the fourth team of Group A - Auckland 2. In the afternoon they will be facing the Winner of the tie between Hawkes Bay and Waikato. Other teams at the Auckland Badminton Centre will be Auckland 1, North Harbour, Bay of Plenty and Wellington North will be at the courts.

The Eastland Team is Kevin Lee from the Gisborne Badminton Club, Ron Prebble, Kevin Taylor, Linda White, Annabel Riwaka and Ruth Ledger, all from the Patutahi Badminton Club and Matheus Batlajeri, on loan player from Manawatu. Ron Prebble returns to the team and Sheree Gray, is unavailable for these ties.

The team is hoping to hold their own on Saturday, but are disappointed this is their final weekend of Inter-Provincial Badminton for 2019.

Win and loss for Eastland super vets

Tournament hosts had a win and a loss in the second round of the 2019 Inter-Association Super Veterans Division Division 2 badminton competition.

Gisborne’s Badminton Centre was the venue for a weekend of ties.

Eastland lost their tie with the Bay of Plenty team 6 matches to 3 and won the tie against Hawke’s Bay.

The Eastland team was members were Kevin Lee (Gisborne Badminton Club), Bruce Ledger, Kevin Taylor, Sheree Gray, Linda White, Annabel Riwaka and Ruth Ledger (all from the Patutahi Club) and Matheus Batlajeri, (on loan from Manawatu). Ron Prebble was unavailable for these ties.

After the first weekend of inter provincial competition Eastland was placed in the middle of the competition.

Against Bay of Plenty Bruce Ledger and Lee had their chance but lost in two close games 19-21, 21-23. Taylor and Batlajeri took a while to warm up and lost in two games. Lee and Taylor had a close first game but could not maintain their momentum and lost in two games.  In the women’s doubles Ruth Ledger and White lost in two games. White combined with Gray and they held off their opposition to win in two games. Gray and Riwaka comfortably won their match in two games. 

In the mixed doubles Batlajeri and Riwaka had an exciting 3 game match. They won the first game and lost the second, but refocused and took the third. Taylor combined with Ruth Ledger but they lost in two games. Lee and Gray lost their first game narrowly 21-19, but Bay of Plenty dominated the second game, to win the match, for a tie result of Bay of Plenty 6 Eastland 3.

Against Hawke’s Bay. Bruce Ledger and Batlajeri lost a tense first game 19-21, then fought back to take the next 21 -18, and the third 21-17. Taylor and Batlajeri struggled to get their rhythm and lost in two games. Lee and Taylor played consistent badminton but couldn’t get through the defence put up by the Hawkes Bay pairing and lost in two games.

In the women’s double Ruth Ledger and Riwaka they lost their first game to former Gisborne player Brenda Barber and her partner. The Eastland pair refocused and took the next game 21-11.Play see-sawed in the third game before the Hawkes Bay pairing took a battling 22-20 win. Ruth Ledger and White won the first 24-22, Hawkes refocussed, changed their serve and dominated the second game, Eastland fought back in the third but Hawkes Bat kept the upper hand and won 21-18. Gray and Riwaka took the first game of their match and continued their domination to win fairly easily. With only the mixed doubles to play Eastland were 4 – 2 down in the match score.

Batlajeri and Riwaka won their first game 21-19, but in the second let the play get away from them and Hawkes Bay won it. That prompted a serious change of game plan and they romped ahead with the third, 21-10. It had been a few years since Taylor and White had played doubles together but they dominated the first game, lost the second narrowly, and – with luck and good play – won an exciting third game 21-18.   Lee and Gray lost their first  game, came back to win 21-18, and dominated the third for a scoreline of 21-6.

By winning all the mixed doubles Eastland took the tie 5 - 4.
