OVERVIEW of funFERNS Year 1 & 2 

(5-6 year olds)

Specifically for Year 1 & 2 players (5-6 year olds) which is designed to be fun and give players the opportunity to catch, pass and shoot from day one.  Focus on this group is on learning the very basics of netball.  Players will play 5 v 5  game format and will be encouraged to use the entire allocated court space to help develop their skills.

  • Group NetballSmart Dynamic Warmup led by Kaipara Netball Centre  (10 mins)
  • Coaches Meeting with Year 1 & 2 Junior Coordinator  (10 mins)

  • Coaches will teach a weekly skill following the futureFERNS resource booklet
  • Transition (5 mins)
  • Game - 5v5 on 2 x third court
  • 2.1m goals
  • Blue soft balls
  • 2 x 8 min halves with 2 min breaks
  • Cool down  (10 mins)
  • No positions just coloured bibs
  • Coaches are allowed on court to help support and encourage their players throughout the game

Week 1-6: both Year 1&2 teams will play 5v5 game format (see above)

Week 6-12: Year 2 teams OR mix of both will have the option to try 6v6 format to help transition into Year 3/4 grade.

futureFERNS Year 3 & 4

(7-8 years olds)

Specifically for Year 3 & 4 players (7-8 year olds) which is designed to develop fundamental movement skills and discover new skills whilst having a fun and positive learning experience.  Players will play a 6v6 modified game format and will be encouraged to try all positions on the court throughout the season.

Grading Weeks: 2 - all teams will play 2 x shorter games each grading week ( 2 x 8 min halves with 2 min breaks)

Competition Type: 1 x full round robin, semi finals and finals TBC

Game Times: all games played on one single round at 10.30am (4 x 8 min quarters with 2 min breaks)

(9-10 year olds)

Specifically for Year 5 & 6 players (9-10 year olds) which is designed to be fun and maximise participation for all players.  Focus on this group is on learning the basics of netball.  Players will play 6v6 modified game format and will be encouraged to try all positions on the court throughout the season.

futureFerns Intermediates Year 7 & 8

(11-13 year olds)

Players have developed a considerable understanding of the game and are now playing 7 v 7. The emphasis is on converting fundamental movement and basic Netball skills to foundation Netball skills. Performance, challenge and playing are key motives for this age group. Positional rotation is encouraged and playing at least half a game will give each player the opportunity to participate and develop their skills.
