Training Sessions

NCAC offer two training sessions per week. There is training fees involved, refer below Registration & Athlete Fees.

Monday session at the Ashgrove Park fields

Speed work 5.30pm - 6.30pm for athletes 12+

Tuesday sessions at the Rangiora New Life School fields

Drills & Skills 5.00 - 6.30pm for all athletes 7-14yrs

Training sessions are designed by our head coach & after the open days, individuals are monitored throughout the season.

What to expect at Training!

Athletes are coached through warm-up and stretching routines. Separated into groups to rotate around the athletic stations & supported to learn & practice techniques involved in track & field. The athletes learn many drills to help them make their best decisions during competition. The session ends with warm down and stretching routines.

Suitable footwear and clothing must be worn at training. Bring a drink bottle!

We are predominately parent run & largely rely on our NCAC family to help. Get yourself involved. Help us set up the athletic stations & the equipment. At the completion, return equipment to the storage container. Parent help is also appreciated at the stations throughout the session so quality coaching can occur. Yes you do have skills - we need you! (please check out 'Parent Help' tab above).

Throughout the season there are several opportunities for parents to learn fundamentals in coaching athletic disciplines. Watch & learn.

What we expect!

Simple, we expect your child to come ready to put in effort, open to learn new things with a smile & bring their best sports person-like attitude. Expect to be part of our NCAC family.

Interclub Competition

Commencing Saturday XXth October 2024.

Held at the Nga Puna Wai Sports Hub in Christchurch commencing 8.30am through to after midday. The many athletic clubs from around Canterbury attend to compete.

It is a big morning of events so bring a picnic, a blanket & camp chairs. NCAC erect a marque & flag offering shelter & a place to be as a team. There is usually a sausage sizzle or a food & coffee stall operating. Don’t forget your sunscreen and warm gear.

The first two Interclub days in October are GRADING DAYS & a great chance for new families to try athletics. After which it is mandatory to be registered with a club.

The morning competition is efficiently operated by the Canterbury Childrens Athletics Association (CCAA). They do a fantastic job for the many athletes that compete.

RULES!!! yes there are rules, check them out below.

Relay Selection

If your child is selected in a NCAN relay team be prepared to have your athlete at Nga Puna Wai at 8.30am to marshall for relay entry. Selections are by our head coach who shall inform you of your selection.

Parents shall also be asked to ensure the team makes the marshalling time.

Athlete Responsibilities

It is the athletes (& your) responsibility to get to their respective event in the right place at the right time. For new athletes it may take 1 or 2 Saturdays to get used to how events are officiated.

Age Grade

An athlete's age grade is determined by their age at 31 December. If unsure please ask.

Nga Puna Wai Sports Hub Rules

  • Only competitors, duty parents & officials are allowed inside the arena or track area (i.e. inside the fence line). NO PARENTS are permitted inside the arena unless they are performing a Club Duty, children must make their own way to their event. They will get there!
  • No athletes or parents are permitted to walk across the centre of the arena (large grassed area), they must go around the outside.
  • Spikes can be worn from Grade 10. 6mm cone shaped spikes are the only spikes permitted to be worn on the track. On exiting the track, spike shoes MUST be removed.
  • Any concerns you have should be reported to your club captain/manager in the first instance.
  • NO FOOD is allowed inside the arena, this applies to officials, athletes and parents performing Club Duty.
  • WATER ONLY is allowed inside the arena, absolutely NO Powerade or such, this applies to officials, athletes and parents performing Club Duty.
  • No clothing or spike bags are permitted inside the arena.
  • NO CELLPHONES are permitted inside the arena, this applies to officials, athletes and parents performing Club Duty.

Club Duty / Parent Responsibility - 2023/24

Parents across all clubs are responsible to facilitate the events. NCAN do so on a rostered basis. 2023/24 our club shall be assigned to ‘Shot Put B' & 'Marshalling'. As a club we are responsible & attending is very important.

Our club may be asked to perform other Duties to ensure kids events are facilitated.

It is likely that when you are this duty parent you may NOT see your own child compete that day.

We also require one parent to help officiate 'Relay Change 1'. Not difficult & you shall be provided with all the information you need to know. This duty only lasts as long as the relay event is run.

A roster shall be drawn up for ALL parents. It will be your responsibility to attend your rostered duty. If you for some reason cannot attend, it will be up to you to find an alternative person or swap with another club parent.

Twice a season the Club is also rostered as the 'Duty Club', this means the Club is responsible for the setup of equipment for the day, the set up & removal of hurdles throughout the day & pack up at the end of the session. Parents will be needed at the ground by 8am & stay for pack up at the end of the session which is generally around 1.30pm. We have found that the more hands on deck the quicker this is done.
