COACHES CODE OF CONDUCT & ETHICS

As a coach of Southern Netball Club you must meet the following requirements in regard to your conduct as a coach and in any role, you hold within Southern Netball.

​​​​​​​1. Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every individual athlete as a human being.

Treat everyone equally regardless of sex, disability, ethnic origin or religion. Respect the talent, development stage and goals of each athlete in order to reach their full potential.

2. Be a positive Role Model, Ensure the player’s time spent with you is a positive experience
- players are deserving of equal attention and opportunities, Be Fair Considerate and Honest with players.

3. Treat each player as an individual
- Respect the talent, developmental stage and goals of each individual player
- Help each player reach their full potential

4.  Be professional in and accept punctuality and responsibility for your actions.

- Display high standards in your language, manner, punctuality, preparation and presentation.
- Display control, respect, dignity and professionalism to all involved with the sport – this includes opponents, coaches, officials, administrators, the media, parents and spectators.
- Encourage your players to demonstrate the same qualities.

5.  Make a commitment to providing a quality service to your players.
- Maintain or improve your current coaching accreditation
- Seek continual improvement through performance appraisal and ongoing coach education
- Provide a training programme which is planned and sequential
- Maintain appropriate records

6. Operate within the rules and spirit of your sport - The rules and guidelines of IFNA/NNZ should be followed
- The New Zealand Sports Drug Agency provides legislation to operate within

7. Any physical contact with players should be appropriate to the situation and necessary for the player’s skill development
- Understand that your intentions and the players interpretations of touching will be influenced by cultural differences and religious implications.
- Be sensitive to the impact of different degrees of interpersonal proximity and be aware that unnecessary touching may offend

8. Refrain from any intimate relationship or affair with your players

9. Avoid unaccompanied and unobserved activities with persons under 18 years of age, wherever possible, - This includes not being alone in a room or vehicle with a player


10. Refrain from any form of personal abuse
- This includes verbal, physical and emotional abuse
- Be alert to any forms of abuse directed towards your players from other sources whilst they are in your care

11.  Refrain from any form of sexual harassment towards your players

12. Provide a safe environment for training at facilities and in competition
- Ensure equipment and facilities meet safety standards
- Equipment, rules and the environment need to be appropriate for the age and ability of the players

13.  Show concern and caution towards sick and injured players
- Provide a modified training programme where appropriate
- Allow further participation in training and competition only when appropriate
- Seek medical advice when required
- Maintain the same interest and support towards sick and injured players

14. Team Personnel are not to attend team training or matches whilst under the influence of Alcohol, and/or Drugs,


Coaches Should:

*           Have access to self-improvement opportunities

*           Be matched with a level of coaching appropriate to their ability
