2022 Arrowtown Rally Review (by Stuart Francis) & Results:

Twenty one motorcycles (and four escorts) set off from Lumsden and despite a couple mechanical issues they nearly all got there in the end. Lucas Nicholl’s 1925 Model P Triumph had a plug problem, the plug was replaced at Kingston, he then rode to Frankton, then back to Invercargill (a bloody good effort!). Tony Warren’s BSA C11 got a puncture in the extensive road works just above the 5 Rivers junction. On Sunday morning Craig Cunningham discovered his Norton Commando petrol tank was smaller than he thought. As usual the weathermen got it wrong, it poured down from Fairlie to the lunchtime stop at Kingston golf club, however it cleared up during lunch. I took my 1946 Velocette MAC which was ideally suited to the run. With little tourist traffic it was great fun bend swinging along the "Devil's Staircase", the only vehicle that was potentially going to spoil the fun had the good grace to pull into a layby. Donald Ward was gob smacked to win the Arrowtown rally – he was only 2 seconds out on the timed run! Donald was riding his 1955 AJS Model 20. Bob Moore won the Publican’s choice with his immaculate 1971 BSA Rocket 3. The Fork and Tap became the unofficial centre of operations, the New Orleans was closed for structural repairs. My new collapsible trailer proved its worth, with Ann-marie following on behind without the worry of trying to tow or reverse the trailer. However trying to re-assemble the trailer in the Arrowtown car park, at 8 o clock on Sunday morning, in a cloud of sand-flies, was a character building experience!
