Bryn Murray – Head of Coaching and Vice President of Mackenzie Ice Hockey
Having grown up in the Mackenzie at The Wolds station, Bryn skated from age five and played his way through all the MIH Club grades and Rep teams until he played for a university team in Dunedin. He joined the NZIHL league in the Skycity Stampede (Queenstown) and remained on the team until age 35 when he retired from high level competition. Since then he’s played for Bull Tahr seniors, when he can spare time from his busy schedule running The Wolds station.
In his Club role as head of coaching he sets the tone for the international coaches, ensuring that they have training plans suitable to advance the level of the various age groups and specialist Rep team members, as well as overseeing other player-parents while he is currently focused on the Under 12 grade.

How did you find yourself in Tekapo Springs (TS)?
Colin has recently travelled in France and Japan and NZ was the next step in his working holiday journey. He’s dabbled in sailing yachts and instructed in summer and winter sport seasons, so when he had his work Visa sorted and found the ice hockey coach role at TS he thought this was a great fit.
Theo’s main travel goal is to learn English. He has been in NZ for a while working in the north on kiwi and apple farms, then to Twizel as a kitchen hand and housekeeper. He arrived at TS to work as a life guard but once his ice hockey skill was noticed he’s now doing winter coaching work too.
Tell us about home and your ice hockey experience?
Growing up in Stouffille, a city north in the greater Toronto area, Colin played ice hockey at a competitive youth grade to ‘AAA’ (which is the highest level). However he chose to step back to a fun level of play going forward, allowing him to enjoy summer camps and weekends with soccer and other activities. He went on to study in Toronto and Ottawa university.
Theo is from a small city north of Paris, starting to play ice hockey at school then later in a French military team.
Any observations about MIH so far?
Colin is impressed and surprised at this level of ice hockey in NZ and Tekapo, with some very good local players.
Perfect! Everyone has been very kind and helpful to Theo, especially with his limited English. He is particularly keen to teach youth and seniors about game strategy.
Which team do you support?
To keep his parents happy Colin supports three NHL teams – Toronto Maple Leafs (the Leafs) + Montréal Canadiens (the Habs) + Ottawa Senators / Sénateurs d’Ottawa (the Sens)!
Theo supports any team with a French national player! At the moment that is Pittsburgh Penguins and Montréal Canadiens.
