2019 Sports Awards

Senior Sportsman of the Year - Ryan Ghee

Ryan was a key member of the 1st XI Football side which finished runners up in their division. Ryan finished the season as top goal scorer for the team. Ryan’s leadership qualities also shone this year, captaining the Senior Boys Tennis team who went on to win the Auckland A3 Grade. Outside of school, Ryan plays Tennis for Next Gen where his teams also came out on top.

Ryan’s talents don’t stop there, he is also impressive in the water, coming in second for the Senior Boys at our Annual Swimming Sports.

Senior Sportswoman of the Year - Katie Lloyd

Katie was a key member of our Senior A Netball team who gained promotion this year. She was a valued team member by her peers and was always willing to try new positions. Her commitment to the game was obvious, always turning up to support when injured or sick, and took on coaching and umpiring duties as well.

Katie was also a member of the Girls Basketball team who performed very well, making it into the Open B Championship Division and was our Senior Girls Swimming Champ.

Junior Sportsman of the Year - Jake Earnest

Jake is a natural sportsman, representing our school in 3 codes this year. A member of the Junior Boys Football team, Jake started the season off in the heart of defence before donning the gloves midway through the season and pulled off some fantastic saves. Jake was also a key member of the Junior Boys Volleyball team who finished 2nd in their division.

However, the majority of Jake’s time is spent riding his BMX and Mountain Bikes. Representing our school, Jake picked up Silver in the North Island Schools Mountain Bike Championships. Jake was also crowned Mountain Bike New Zealand National Series Downhill U15 Boys Champion and then went on to compete at the National Champs, placing 2nd, missing out on top spot by 0.1seconds. At the Oceania Downhill Championships, he placed 3rd.

In BMX, Jake was crowned Auckland Champ and placed runner up at the National Champs. Most recently, at the North Island Titles, he placed 2nd and 4th in the 20 inch and cruisier categories.

Junior Sportswoman of the Year - Sacha Earnest

Sacha spends the majority of her time on her BMX and Mountain Bikes, and it certainly pays off with the accolades she has achieved this year.

Representing our school, Sacha placed 2nd at the North Island Schools MTB Champs for Enduro. At the National Schools Championships she went one better and crowned the NZ Schools Overall Champion for the U14 Female category. In the MTB National Downhill Series, Sacha was crowned overall champion and went on to compete at the National Downhill Champs, and just missed out on top spot. Sacha also picked up not one, but two Oceania titles. One in Mountain Bike and the other in BMX to go along with her BMX Auckland Champs title and runner up placing at the BMX National Championships. Most recently in BMX, Sacha finished runners up at the BMX NZ North Island Titles in both 20 inch and cruisier classes.

Off the bikes, Sacha is a talented Swimmer, representing our school at the College Sport Central Zone Swimming in Butterfly, Backstroke and freestyle. Sacha also placed second in the year 9 girls' cross country.

Service to Sport - Shivani Patel

Shivani has been a huge asset to the Sports Department this year. Her passion for Netball has seen her contribute to the sport in more ways than one. Whilst being a member of our Senior A Netball Team, Shivani also gave up her time to Coach and Umpire. Shivani co-coached the Y9/10 Netball B team and often umpired matches for the team she coached, and other teams we put out on the courts.

Away from the Netball courts, Shivani was the leader of the Sports Committee and was instrumental in getting the Inaugural Staff vs Leavers series up and running. From ensuring posters were up around the school advertising the matches to organising the Leavers teams, Shivani was key to making the event a success, which was eventually won by the Leavers.

Excellence in Sport - Ruitong Li & Daniel Hu

Following on from a successful season in our Premier Badminton team, where they finished runners up in what was our first year in the Auckland Premier Grade, Ruitong and Daniel both represented their Federations at the Badminton New Zealand U-15 Nationals. The pair each came away with individual and team honours, taking out the Singles and Doubles U-15 events in their respective categories.

Team of the Year - U19A Basketball Boys

Defeating Dilworth 43-41 in the final of the College Sport Auckland Open B Boys Basketball Final meant the team went through the season unbeaten, earning back-to-back titles in the Open B Division. The team has moved up to Open A for 2020.

Manager of the Year - Mrs Ximena Borquez

Mrs Borquez is one of our PE Teachers at ACG Parnell College and has been crucial to the development of our Badminton programme. 2019 saw us enter 11 teams in both Term 2 and 3 inter-school competitions and run three social club sessions during the week at school. This means four afternoons and/or mornings of Badminton take up Mrs Borquez's time as well as the 100+ students she has to deal with.

We are so grateful for all of her dedication and commitment to the sport.

Student Volunteer of the Year - Lada Volkova

Lada has been a fantastic servant and role model for ACG Parnell Sport in 2019. Lada took on a co-coaching role of the Year 7 and 8 Netball teams for the second year in a row. Lada's commitment and dedication towards their early morning trainings and Tuesday evening games was obvious and she possesses top class communication skills and natural empathy for the girls that she coaches. Her efforts in coaching were also recognised as a top 3 finalist at the College Sport Auckland Young Sportsperson of the Year Awards for Student Coach of the Year.

Lada's selflessness goes above and beyond the sport she is most passionate about (Netball) as she also co-led the Body Conditioning Club which is solely student led. A group of committed students was formed who turn up week after week.

Further to this, Lada gave up important class time to volunteer at events that required officials from each school to help with the running of the event.

Coach of the Year - Tane de Silva

Tane was Head Coach of both our U19A Boys and U19 Girls Basketball Teams and was instrumental in bringing both teams together to achieve the success that they did.

The U19A Boys Team went through their season undefeated, winning the Open B Division whilst our only girls team also competed in the Open B Grade, reaching the championship round.
