The Cheviot Cricket Club was formed before the First World War and invitation games were arranged with teams from the neighbouring districts of Waiau, Rotherham and Glenmark. The games were played at the Cheviot Show Grounds where a concrete pitch was used.

In 1953 the Cheviot Cricket Club established a permanent home at the Cheviot Hills Domain where a concrete pitch with a latex covering was used.

In 1975 the Club in conjunction with the Cheviot Hills Reserve embarked upon major improvements to the grounds and facilities, including a new pitch. The vastly improved grounds were opened in November 1978 with a special match between Canterbury Representative XI and the Clubs team of invited notable players. Mr Walter Hadlee (then President of the New Zealand Cricket Board) attended and declared the grounds ‘open for play’.

David Boon the Australia Test Cricketer made the first century at the new ground when he toured with the Tasman Under 19 team in 1978. Since then the club has been host to several overseas teams and many from all over New Zealand in addition to local competitions.
