Technical Officials

Technical Officials are an essential part of every swimming competition. They help ensure races are conducted fairly, safely, and according to the rules while creating positive experiences for all swimmers.

Whether you're a parent, former swimmer, supporter, or simply want to become more involved in our sport, becoming a Technical Official is a rewarding way to contribute to the swimming community.

As a Technical Official you will:

Support swimmers and help competitions run smoothly
Learn new skills and gain confidence
Meet great people and become part of the swimming community
Develop leadership, communication, and decision-making skills
Have opportunities to progress from club meets through to regional, national, and even international events

OFFICALS PATHWAY

How Do I Get Started?

Most new officials begin by training as an Inspector of Turns (IOT).

(EACH STEP INCLUDES A LINK TO CLICK ON)

STEP 1 – Register

STEP 2 – Police Vetting

All accredited Technical Officials are required to complete Police Vetting.

(You will need your SNZ membership number in STEP 1 to do this) Please make sure both forms are completed and sent to policevetting@swimming.org.nz

STEP 3 – Complete Online Learning for IOT

Begin with the online Technical Official learning modules available through the Swimming New Zealand education platform. You will need to register first

STEP 4 – Gain Poolside Experience & complete the Learning IOT Log

Work alongside experienced officials at club meets and competitions while completing your learning log.

STEP 5 – Submit the Application for Assessment

Once you have completed the required training and experience, fill in the Application for Assessment form and send form to the SNZ Technical Officals & Volunteer Development Lead at officials@swimming.org.nz
