Gulf Harbour Radio Yacht Club Incorporated

Racing

Most of our club members race IOM and DF95 yachts, with a small group also racing the RM (Marblehead) Class yachts.   For our current program see the link on the home page.

Venue:

Racing is held at Regency Lake on Regency Park Drive, Gulf Harbour, about 20 minutes from Silverdale and 45 minutes from the Harbour Bridge. Our lake is not large but happily is free of weed.  On some days we race instead at nearby Hobbs Wharf (labelled as Fairway Bay Marina on the map).

Wind is generally steady when from the south or north, gusty if from the west.

Risk Management:

Our risk management plan may be found here.

IOM class:

  • Formal racing & Club Days - Saturday afternoons from 1300
  • Informal racing Tuesday and Thursday from 1300

Other classes up to 1.0 m:

  • Informal racing Saturday mornings 1000 -1230

Rules:

Boats racing on Saturdays for points in club series (other than a fun day) must be measured and carry sail numbers.

The current Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) can be downloaded from this website. They are almost the same as for regular yacht racing, with the relatively minor amendments for radio sailing in Appendix E.

Beginners will find sailing books and online tutorials a more helpful introduction to racing rules. This website has lots of examples and tips, and the AMYA has published some very useful tutorials with illustrations. There are also lots of video guides on YouTube.

Scoring:

No set number of races are scheduled for each day except that a minimum of 5 are required to constitute a contest. Racing commences at 1300 and last race starts no later than 1550.

There are 2 series each year, with alternate Scratch and Handicap days. Refer to the Sailing Instructions on the home page for further details.
