EVENTING
TIMBERLANDS
Timberlands is an inter-club North Island eventing team competition at 80cm and 95cm levels held annually in Tokoroa that consists of 6 riders from each club from areas throughout the North Island. Tauranga’s team is decided by how many points riders collect from their scores over three trialling events held in the Bay Of Plenty.
DRESSAGE
BAY OF PLENTY CHAMPS/NZPCA NORTH ISLAND DRESSAGE CHAMPS
Bay Of Plenty dressage champs is an inter-area competition and is held at a different venue each year in the Bay Of Plenty area. A team of Tauranga PC riders compete against other clubs in the area to win the area trophy. There is also an inter-club dressage quadrille trophy where 4 riders create their own synchronised dressage test set to music. The quadrille is always entertaining to watch and great fun to perform.
A BOP team of 6 riders plus 3 reserves go on and compete at the NZPCA Dressage Champs which are held as part of North Island Champs week in January.
SHOW JUMPING
NORTH ISLAND CHAMPS
This is an inter-club event. A team of 6 riders is put together after two days of trialling at the annual back-to-back SJ competition held in November. They go on and compete at the North Island Show Jumping Champs held in the Waikato each year. The team consists of:
2 Juniors aged 14 & under (90cm)
2 Intermediates aged under 25 (100cm)
2 Seniors aged under 25 (105cm)
SHOW HUNTER
NORTH ISLAND SHOW HUNTER CHAMPS
Pony Club Show Hunter Champs is held in Foxton each year where 8 riders represent their club. There are four categories in which the riders compete:
Cat A: Pony 60cm
Cat B: Pony 70cm
Cat C: Pony 80cm
Hack: 90cm
GYMKHANA
BAY OF PLENTY GYMKHANA CHAMPS
This is an inter-club area event. A team of 24 riders represent Tauranga pony club at the Gymkhana Champs, hosted by a club in the BOP. The club with the most points at the end of the day brings home the shield. The riders compete in four age categories:
10 & under
11-12
13-14
15-24
Each age group competes against riders from other clubs in the same age groups. They compete in the following classes
Rider on the flat
Paced and Mannered
Pony Club Mount
Show Jumping (heights 55cm, 65cm, 75cm, 85cm according to age group)
Show Hunter (heights as per showjumping)
Games - 3 games which change each year
At the conclusion of the above events there are two further interclub events: a showjumping jigsaw (a pairs event for hacks and ponies), and a games relay, in which a team from each club, made up of one rider from each age group, compete for honour and club glory, and sashes!
There is also a trophy for team spirit and good horsemanship.
GAMES
BOP AREA GAMES, ZONE GAMES, and NZPCA CHAMPS
Tauranga Pony Club assemble usually 2 teams each January and arrange specialist coaching to prepare riders for Area Games held in February in the BOP. Teams who have competed at Area Games can go on to Zone Games where they compete against teams fro BOP, Waikato and the King Country. In December the BOP Area PC hold a trial to select the BOP team to go to NZPCA Champs week in January and compete in the National Championship.
