Victoria University Hunters Rugby League Club

START HERE - WHERE GAMES ARE FUN AND EXCITING!

Our Mini/Mod and Junior Hunters have come a long way since beginning off the back of our Premiers Grand Final Championship win in 2014.  Seven years later and we now have 6 junior teams with the Mini/Mods starting at Under 6 years of age to U12, right through the grades to our Junior Teens at 18 years of age.  Our Hunters whanau recognise and value the participation of parent/s and their children in the game of Rugby League.

Mini-Mod has two strands. Mini is an introductory phase that emphasises a positive experience through fun and enjoyment, participation, a safe playing environment and the development of basic movement skills. Mod, still emphasising all those aspects mentioned above, now focuses on technical skills.

Mini-Mod games are designed so that the player’s development can be matched gradually, progressively and sequentially to the complexities and demands of the adult game. All of this, a child oriented philosophy, is conditioning bright and happy children to be drawn to Rugby League through rewarding and satisfying experiences. In this way Mini-Mod is a recruitment and retention tool which must necessarily be supported by good club climate, coaches and parents. "New Zealand Rugby League"

This year New Zealand Rugby League will be rolling out the following and piloting throughout the rest of the country:

  • The first year kids play rugby league (U6) will be played under non-contact ‘League Tag’ rules for the first half of the season. At the halfway point teams can decide if they want to stick to non-contact or switch to tackling.
  • It will also be mandatory for U6 coaches to deliver a six-week tackle confidence programme.
  • In the U8-U12 grades a first-receiver bib will be used in games, this is to encourage skill development in playmakers by allowing the person in that bib to run, score and be tackled without two passes being required (which was the case under the old rules).
  • In the U9-U12 grades there’ll also be a dummy-half bib used for the same reasons as outlined above.
